NBD!

I’ve been a reaaaaallly good boy. Instead of buying more bikes I’ve been offloading some. I sold the Canyon Grizl and I gave away my Giant Reign and When I sold the Dogma F I tried not to go straight into another project bike, so I’ve been working on Gina’s bike (lol), but at the same time I’ve been eyeing all sorts of potential projects, everything from a fake SL8, Elves, a Canyon Aeroad, the upcoming new Aethos (but do I really need another weight weenie bike?!) to the new Cervelo S5.

The S5 just looks so damn fast sitting still and I love how the older S5 looks vs. the new one. The new one piece cockpit just doesn’t do it for me (that ‘bump’ in the middle of the bars looks so ugly) and the new bike’s deep headtube looks out of proportion, but good news is that the new frame can take the old bars (and hey that would be slightly rebellious!). All that said I’ve been hyper aware that I don’t make enough power to get the most out of a full on aero bike (but I think they look amaaaaazing).

I reached out to Jing from CCACHE to help me find a new S5 frameset (I really need to never buy a complete bike new ever again as I always end up changing every single part on it anyways!). Turns out they’re out of stock Aus. wide in size 51, and the soonest I could get one is October.

I almost put a deposit down on one, but thought I’d sit it out and see if an older size 51 pops up on Facebook Marketplace. A few months back there were plenty, but I missed that train, so since then I’ve been refreshing like a mad man.

And well, this morning I found one, in Sydney and in as new condition. What’s even better is that it’s in the colourway I like the most (gloss black fork, matte black frame). I’m Asian, and was brought up to haggle, so I low balled, and was met with a solid no, price is set, but with the twist of an arm and a little charm I managed to get half way and welp, the bike is now mine!

Not my photos (photos from the listing, seller takes a decent shot!). Sadly (for me) it’s got a full Dura-Ace setup (just like the Dogma F) but hey, even though I’m a SRAM fan it’ll be nice to have something different in the stable (and yay I get to buy another direct mount hanger!).

I’m assuming the ENVE wheels are hookless (might be wrong here), which would mean they’re set up tubeless. As hot as they look I’d prefer not to run hookless or tubeless so I might have to sell them (they’re worth a lot new so hopefully they’ll sell easily enough).

Whilst I’ll try my best to not go full weight weenie on an aero bike (challenge accepted?!) I think I’d like this to be a 1 by setup. The Dura-Ace crankset is a heavy AF too so I’ll most likely get some shorter and lighter 160mm cranks. The ENVE’s are heavy at 1600g. If I can sell them I wouldn’t hesitate to get some lighter (maybe even deeper) Chinese wheels (ZEN Carbon Bike perhaps).

A couple of days before pickup the seller let me know that the bike was in the shop to get the bartape replaced and they found a crack in the bars. The shop is replacing the bars under warranty, bit of a bummer as it was raining all week and I wanted to get busy working on it (and I just really wanted to close the deal!).

Good news is the bars are in, and he’s going to get them on at the shop (Wheelhaus) this Thursday. Fingers crossed all goes well and the bike is mine.

The adapter pushes the caliper outward so the brakes don’t hit the seat tube.

Call me a hippy, but I strongly believe in the power of manifestation.

Now that I have a rim brake bike I can finally put on some Cane Creek eeBrakes (some of the lightest rim brake calipers ever sold, also some of the most costly!). Turns out I need an SL6 specific rear caliper and an adapter to get them to fit on my size 52 frame, and guess what? The adapter is no longer in production!

I’ve spent the past week looking for one. Jing at CCACHE let e know that if I do find one, he can scan it and re-make them, so I’ve posted WTB’s on Facebook and the Weight Weenie forums too. I even sent the Cane Creek guys this email:

Hi guys,

The eeBrakes have been an object of desire for me for MANY years. I’ve just never had a bike I deemed worthy enough to put them on, until now!

I’ve just scored a gorgeous Specialized S-WORKS SL6 Tarmac (it’s literally in NOS condition) and the first thing I want to put on it it are eeBrakes, but in doing some research, it looks like I need an adaptor to make the rear brake fit as it’s a size 52 frame.

I’ve searched the entire internet for an adaptor with no luck. My local bike shop CCACHE (who sell eeBrakes) have suggested that I’m doomed as they’re no longer in production.

I’m heartbroken… seriously!

I’m 49, recently sold my house, so now I can finally afford nice things! Is there any chance at all that you might re-stock these?

Thanks in advance for any help!

They sent me an awesome response:

We do appreciate your support and excitment with our eeBrakes.
I have 3 sets (Regular Mount) on my bikes and very happy with them.

Yes – your SL6 Direct Mount design frameset does require the adaptor.
You have done your homework and it is a unique part that was specifically designed for that model.
The 54cm and smaller frames require it to align the caliper to function as required.
Also, the caliper has a ‘short’ arm lever. This is needed for the deep aero seat tube and ensures it will clear the frame.

I imagine that you are going to have some challenges finding this part.
I will pass this request over to our product development team for their review.

This morning I went on a search again for the Cane Creek SL6 eeBrake adapter. I clicked every link only to find, again, that every single place that has the adapter listed in their online shop is out of stock, but then… holy crap! I found someone in Singapore selling them on Carousell.

Listing reads:
Only compatible with Specialized Tarmac SL6 frame
-Material: aluminum ( Mounting Screws are not included)
-Bike body mounting: Direct Mount

I created an account, but can’t chat to the seller as I don’t have a local number. I’ve since found a broker in Singapore who can buy the item, then send it to me. This is looking good!

It was raining hard last night and we were starving. It was 7pm so we decided to order something to eat. We loaded up Uber Eats and it was a blackout. There wasn’t one single restaurant open for delivery. WOW… so Uber doesn’t deliver food when it’s pissing down rain? Good to know! We then loaded up Deliveroo. There were only around 12 restaurants to choose from and all of them suggested long waits of 45min+.

It’s times like this, when you’re starving and there’s no good food delivery available, that you think of ordering a pizza.

Domino’s or Pizza Hut?

Anyone who’s been to Italy and had a real pizza KNOWS that Domino’s and Pizza Hut pizzas DO NOT look anything like the OG; thin crust, minimum topping of only a little bit of cheese and a veggie or two, sometimes a meat. It was the Americans who made the pizza what it is today; bigger, thicker and overloaded with cheese and toppings.

Pizza Hut opened up in Australia in 1970, Domino’s a fair bit later in 1983. I was born in 1975, Sydney Australia and never heard of Domino’s until my teenage years. McDonalds in Kingsford today was once where Pizza Hut was, in fact both McDonalds and Pizza Hut shared the same location for many years. For my family it was mostly McDonalds by day and Pizza Hut at night. McDonalds already felt like fast food chain with it’s slippery plastic booths and hard tiled floor. Pizza Hut felt much more like a restaurant with mood lighting, carpet and table cloths.

We debated for a minute. We knew Domino’s would be fast. 20 minutes flat and it would be at our door, piping hot. We then reminisced about how Pizza Hut was more about restaurants than fast delivery. We remembered having good times in Pizza Hut restaurants as children, the salad bar, the gingerbread men, and we also remembered the extremely deep-dish pan they brought out to the table when ordering a deep pan pizza.

We decided to go old school and order Pizza Hut. In a new browser window we google searched “Pizza Hut” and this is what came up:

Surely this shouldn’t be allowed? We searched for ‘Pizza Hut’ and the first result, a paid advertisement, is Domino’s and the 2nd advert underneath it is Pizza Hut. How on earth is this acceptable? There’s just something SO wrong about this that it hurts to think about it.

We accidentally clicked on a Domino’s link 3 times when we were trying to find discount coupons for Pizza Hut (we only found Domino’s coupons but failed to easily find any Pizza Hut coupons), in the end we decided to leave the coupons out of it and just go check out the Pizza Hut website.

What a mess. The Pizza Hut website has been optimised for your phone, problem is we were viewing it on a browser, on a large monitor with browser set to full screen. Content loaded in a thin strip in the centre (obviously designed for phones), but adding things to the cart and confirming steps forced us to hunt for the “next” buttons, which loaded all the way in the extremities of the screen.

We then realised there was no pizza tracking, and that it would take 45 minutes or more. Is Pizza Hut trying to NOT be competitive?!

Domino’s dominance now made total sense. Choosing between Pizza Hut and Domino’s seems to be more about the ease of ordering and speed of delivery vs actual quality of the pizza itself.

On checkout we noticed an option to pay by cash! Hey! The galloping ‘481 11 11’ jingle came to mind! We figure that opting to pay cash might suggest we were going to tip, and maybe that would get the pizza to us faster?

The 481 11 11 jingle in the video above killed it pre-internet, when phones were how you ordered pizzas.

Pizza Hut delivered in around 45 minutes. We still gave the driver a $5 tip (that Chinese red packet money came in handy!) and for that the driver was extremely grateful.

The pizzas were as expected. One bite of the Supreme and that capsicum just took us back. The deep pan wasn’t anywhere near as deep as it was back in the 90’s, but it still had that oily olive oil base that had been fried on the pan for that crunchy crust. If a pizza is all about the crust, then we think Pizza Hut wins, hands down.

In the end we tried to weigh up the difference between going for something more from the heart (in this case Pizza Hut), or going for convenience (Domino’s). But in reality it cost us more to go old school, and it took way longer to arrive.

It’s obvious that Domino’s success is based on tech and delivery. Where Pizza Hut invested in eat-in restaurants, Domino’s invested into a killer, easy to use online ordering and tracking system which gathered a lot more franchisees, which in turn allowed them to radically expand their network, thus allowing them to offer ultra-quick delivery of 20-minutes.

So in conclusion, There’s no doubt that Domino’s Pizza would have been cheaper, gotten to us faster and it would have been hotter too. There’s something to be said about how both Pizza Hut and Domino’s pizza base and crust, when not so hot, tastes like cardboard. We’d argue that Pizza Hut wins on the crust, but it’s not by a large margin.

After filling our bellies we came to a somewhat sad conclusion that the ‘feels’ didn’t quite outweigh the logic. We went old school for the romance, but the ordering system was a little clunky, not knowing exactly how long the delivery was going to take made us a little nervous, and in the end, the long wait and not so hot pizzas kinda tarnished the whole experience of wanting to support the alternative.

In conclusion, we’re on the fence and we’ll most likely be on the fence for quite some time when it comes to choosing between these 2 giants of fast food pizza delivery.

We’re sure though that most of you guys already have a preference between the 2 giants. We assume more of you would be ordering Domino’s due to their superior online ordering system and fast delivery, but what if Pizza Hut was to catch up and also implement a great ordering system and fast delivery? Would Pizza Hut once again reign supreme?

RB26 back at IS Motor Racing, the beasts second home.

I got to test out my fresh new Toyo R888 semi’s on the track yesterday. It was a Private Track day held by JDMyard, the best kind as you get as much track time as you want (open pitt lane) and there’s very few people and even less spectators.

I had a horrible night’s sleep, nothing new there as I always get excited before track days! The long drive to Goulburn was painful as always, even worse in the GT-R due to it’s shoe melting hot floorpan, no stereo or air-con. The trip was made more bearable though that I had Matt, Jing and Cliffy in convoy.

The first session out is always a nothing session, especially as you have to come back in an adjust hot pressures of your tyres. Having said that, the car felt good and on a cruisy lap I was already seeing 1.14, then 1.11, then 1.10 and all of this in traffic too. I came back in to find my tyre pressures were at 40 hot. Most would suggest much lower hot pressure for semis so I reduced them to 34 hot and went out for another session.

Second session the GT-R transformed into a drift car. Turn 2 and the last corner on the straight had the car completely sideways and full oppy lock! It’s amazing what a small difference in tyre pressures did to the GT-R. I only managed a 1.11, no traffic but just so much sideways action it wasn’t possible for me to clock a good time.

I came back into the garages quite frustrated, a little rattled that the car was so taily too. I decided to pump the tyres back up to 40 hot and I went out again.

Third session out I hit a 1.08! The car wasn’t crazy tail happy like the previous session with tyre pressures set to 34 hot. Job done! R888, 8th lap, 1.08. I love 8’s!

After a lunch break I notice a lot of fluid under my car, turns out it was oil. Yet another track day ended early in the GT-R! I had to call it a day, a shame as I usually get my best lap time on the last session of the day when the weather is cooler and confidence is up. I know I could have gone much faster, but ultimately I’m happy I got a PB.

I drove the car straight to Indy at IS Motor Racing to check out the oil leak. It turns out the leak came from some braided lines near the oil filter/cooler set-up. Nothing major, as expected.

I ended up having a billion beers and ciggies with Indy, just like old days. We reminisced about the past, and spoke a little about the future too. He’s a constant, so am I. Just head down, do what you do best. I’ve got a lot of respect for the man and always will.

On a final note; I’ve still not tamed the beast and it’s why I love my GT-R so much! I’ve owned over 20 cars and can’t say I’ve ever respected any car more than this one. Seeing it back at Indy’s last night, drunk, in love… it was an awesome thing. I’m back, or well, that’s what it feels like. Home.

DSPTCH camera straps are awesome!

I’ve been wanting a tiny pocket cameras for a while now. It was going to be between the LF1, or the LX7 (which has way better depth of field but is a fair bit larger than the LF1). It’s been a year now of um and erring about which one to get, but the other day Jing bought a Ricoh GR and that pushed me over the edge to make a purchase (lol). I ended up going with the Panasonic Lumix LF1, it’s TINY, shoots in raw, has an electronic viewfinder and Wi-Fi too.

I also bought a DSPTCH wrist sling for it too. Love DSPTCH products as they’re all interchangable via quick release buckles. I often unclip my straps when shooting indoors and these DSPTCH straps make it a breeze to do so.

Celebrated Eddie’s B’Day with Clay Shooting yesterday. Have never shot a gun before (was inevitable, right?!), was mad fun. I loved it!

I got there a little early, and walking around the car park seeing so many guys with guns out just felt so surreal. Seeing guns on picnic tables, guns everywhere! Shooting and hitting targets was actually easier than I thought it would be (I was prepared to not hit a thing!). Recoil wasn’t bad at all (was worse in my mind), though it was funny watching it catch a few people off guard! Ejecting shells is mad! Smells so good too! Highly recommend it for anyone who’s never had a go, we all paid around $100/head and they use competition bullets made in Italy, considering they’re about $1.50/$2/bullet and you get 40 or so shots, that’s great value!

JDMyard organised yet another private track day at Wakefield in Goulburn today, and of-course I was there with bells on.

Hands down, private track days are THE BEST track days out as you’ve got a small group of drivers, an open pitt lane which means you can go out at any time you like, and there aren’t any time restrictions. IE: You could even stay out all day until your fuel ran out (or car blows up), it’s your call!

This time around we went one better and hired the cabins on the track. What we didn’t plan on was getting whack the night before (hey it was JDMyard’s race driver Adam’s B’Day afterall!). Hilarious really as the whole concept of staying out there the night before is meant to be so you could rest up and hit the track fresh the next morning!

PS: I took the MX-5 despite it’s engine being on it’s way out. Dale from DM Motorsport did a great job on the alignment. It’s exactly what I wanted. The car is slow, so a really tail happy set-up made the car twitchy and a whole lot of fun. The steering wheel requiring a lot of input in order to keep it on the circuit when on the limit. I tried my best to hit a 1.16 (which was my best time in my old MX-5 on semi slicks, keep in mind my car has a sick high km’s engine and street tyres!). I managed a best of 1.17.002. .002! Sigh (haha).

Adam’s DC2R, unfortunately his engine blew first session of the morning the next day! Bad luck B’day boy!

Zi’s newly acquired S2K. Thing if beauty! We waited for the traffic to die down and we drove swiftly through the night.

The cabins were once for the Olympians during the Sydney Olympics. Heaps of bedrooms, 3 single beds/room and showers, toilets and sinks line an entire side of the hallway. Totally functional!

We were all starving, and just as we rocked up the guys who were already at the cabin served a killer hot pot! Perfect for the freezing Goulburn temps!

Escalated so quickly. Keep in mind it was FREEZING out there. This was followed by running around the circuit in pitch black, and much much more hilarity ensued till way past everyone’s bedtime!

B’Day boy got his cake.

And ate it too!

This is what happens when you pass out.

The cold woke us all up, but we were greeted with the warmth of the sun.

Cars were cold too, a few had a little trouble starting up!

My socks were wet, so I jammed them in the heater in the lounge room (the only heater in the cabin), saved my ass!

So good to see the bike boys out. Jing, Brandon, Matthew. So rad! Jing let me have a go at his BRZ and I’m happy to say the hype is real. First lap out I had full oppy lock without even trying. The thing is a LOT of fun on the track! I lost control a couple of times but never quite spun out (it’s easy to catch the tail). Miss the apex and it understeers bad, but get it right and it’s a hoot!

Winner of loudest car of the day.

Kiet’s EG. Still a work in progress, but a 1.08 ain’t too shabby!

Photographer extraordinaire Matthew Mead’s new car, which took quite a lot of people by surprise, she’s pretty quick!

Hungry Jacks on the way home has become a tradition over the years.

Just what I needed to get home without sleeping at the wheel!

Post ride selfie (trying to put on a brave smile).

Last time I rode was 2 years ago. Unbelievable how time has flown (then again all I’ve been doing for the past 2 years is Zen!).

I met up with Matt Mead and Jing Li at Loftus, 3pm. I was prepared to die… and die I did.

After the first single trail section my thighs were burning. Such a bad sign! 1/3rd the way in I started to feel my lungs, but in a bad way! I made it up the first climb in my granny ring but stopping at the top was a bad idea. I got dizzy and almost threw up. From there on I walked all the big hills, something I’ve never had to do before.

Whilst riding I couldn’t stop thinking about having a cold fizzy coke… water just wasn’t doing it for me. By the end of the ride I had a bad stomach cramp. HAHAHA! SO WEAK!

I’ve got to keep it up, and ride again next Monday, otherwise today’s efforts would have been wasted. Got to thank Jing and Matt so much for going easy on me today. Legends!

Bags packed, have been looking forward to this much deserved break for a while now. Matt picked me up from Zen and on route we were discussing where we were going to stay. A jetty, a cinema room… it all sounded way too familiar, turns out it was the house next door to the amazing place I stayed at last year.

The house on the left is the one I stayed at last year, we were staying in the one on the right, also such a great house.

Was so awesome to be back here. Such an amazing place.

We were all together to celebrate Jing’s B’day, which we did last year at The Entrance, this year we were treated to an amazing strawberry and watermelon B’day cake by Black Star Pastry!

The B’day boy. Couldn’t get over Jing’s new hairstyle for at least the first 20 minutes, haha.

We hit the grog pretty late last night, coffee and breakfast set us right in no time.

Jing’s Audi Allroad (I love it!).

Such a nice place to be inside. A short drive to Pelican to hire some boats for the day.

Pelicans at Pelican!

Unfortunately we failed to get a house boat, so we had to settle for 2 dinghy’s instead.

We collectively caught a lot of Brim (I only managed to catch one), but none of them were of legal size, still great fun though!

Winnie made a killer spag bol for dinner. So so good.

And she also made pizza! Home made bases and all!

Late afternoon chills on the jetty.

Cards by night.

We had a late checkout and ended up making the most of it, the boys ended up taking the house supplied dinghy and canoes for a fish on the river.

So cute. Ethan upset that his Dad was rowing back to Vietnam!

Matt and Alissa picked me up from Zen at around lunch time and we set off for The Entrance. We got to the holiday house first, did some food shopping and started smashing beers before everyone else got in.

We freaked the shit out of Jing with party poppers on entry. He didn’t know we were all going to be there! Eddy’s got a hilarious video of his reaction recordered on a go-pro. I’ll see if he can get it up on youtube (it’s sooo good!).

Jing scored these Y3 boots, and some rad snowboarding gear (he doesn’t snowboard lol) and also a Justin Beiber watch, which was presented in a genuine Bell & Ross watch packaging (lol).

The boys got pretty rowdy and smashed beers, then shots of Sambucca and Hennessy, we then picked up our rods and did a bit of night fishing.

We saw the people next to us pick up a 40cm catfish, weed was all we managed to get though (and we lost quite a few beers which dropped into the ocean, accidentally of-course!).

What’s going on here?!

Dizzy walk back home, empty handed.

When Jing jumped in the shower before bed we ran outside and fucked up his new Audi with eyelashes.

A bonnet scoop.

Front and rear batman badges.

Flashing LED lights and rainbow gay family stickers.

Next morning I was pretty hung over despite dunking a berocca before bed. The bacon ($20 worth of it!) helped though.

Little Ethan, he’s the calmest baby I’ve ever met. Such a rad kid!

A sign on our gate at the house.

Brandon’s EVO. Love the Thule storage box!

Kevin’s Golf GTI Edition 35, Eddie’s new Murano and Jing’s A4 Allroad.

We then went for a fish in a different location.

The boys managed to catch a few baby brims (all of which were let go). Me? I nursed my hangover by sunbathing and burnt the fuck out of my chest (the only place I forgot to put lotion on!).

Jody and Ethan.

Fishing brought on a craving for eating fish and chips so we headed back to the main beach for lunch.

Spotted on the side of the road, what a monster!

Spotted this lovely Hillman in the carpark and gave the owner a thumbs up.

Ethan chilling out in the shade. After lunch we tried a different fishing spot which again saw us catching baby brim.

As expected, everyone had rad cameras!

Sunset out on the deck.

Chilling out before dinner.

BBQ feast!

Later that night we did another spot of night fishing. Eddie pulled up this Mono (quite a popular brackish water aquarium fish).

Brim caught was bigger, but still not legal size.

Oh shit!

Jing and Shirley – The next morning we finished off all our food, cleaned up the house then headed to the driving range for a hit.

Matt – Happy Gilmore!

My first 2 hits were awesome, then I lost it (thinking too much!). PS: The T-Shirt I’m wearing was a $10 impulse buy at the local mall. It reads “Grump Old Man!”. Haha.

Shane’s Supra! We headed back in to town for lunch and spotted at least 30 or so Supras, amongst them Shane’s Gorilla Supra (couldn’t find him anywhere unfortunately).

Seafood platter was delicious.

Got back earlier this afternoon from a great weekend away at The Entrance with the BMU boys (and their partners… I was the 3rd wheel!). Great times, heaps of laughs and many feasts too. I’m super burnt, and I’m starving right now as I’ve got a completely empty fridge! More photos on instagram @justinfoxau

PS: Jing’s pics and the entire trip from his perspective are up on his great blog now. Visit: http://jingers.wordpress.com/2013/02/17/30th/

JDMyard hosted the Honda Show Off 2012 today to celebrated their 10th anniversary. 10 years! That’s a massive feat. If it wasn’t for such passionate Honda enthusiasts like Zi and Yonas JDMST would never have existed, so I owe a lot to these guys.

The weather was hot, but a gentle breeze kept the punters (who came en mass!) cool enough. The boys had a massive store wide sale going on too, it was manic in the showroom. The Honda Show Off Categories included: Best Of Show, Best Engine Bay, Best Interior, Best Paint, Best Oldskool Pre 92, Best Stance, Best Hardparker, Best Engine Swap, Best Effort and Because Race Car and lucky me (or unlucky, depends on how you want to look at it!) got to be a judge on the day.

There were a billion photographers out and about so I’m sure a lot of amazing shots will be uploaded over the next week, for now, enjoy my snappy snaps and feature on Zen Garage: http://zengarage.com.au/2012/12/jdmyard-honda-show-off-2012/

Wasn’t exactly Jing’s B’day as his B’day is 10 days away from today. Chinese B’day maybe? Or pre-Valentines Day? In any case the BMU guys got together and hit the Karts, we then (only just) pulled off a surprise party by all being there to spook him as he got out of the shower at his new apartment. Together we bought him a new Next Level Racing GT5 set-up. You’d think we had enough driving with the Karts?!
