Boostcase Hybrid Snap Case for iPhone 5S

boostcase2
Slim case on the phone, and battery on the right.

boostcase3
Battery snapped into slim case and connected.

boostcase1
Charging now with supplied USB cable into Apple usb wall charger.

I’m still being caught out and about without the little keyboard/battery I got for my iPhone 5S a few weeks ago. My power button is playing up and battery life is draining faster than ever. Short of buying a new phone and constantly adjusting the brightness settings manually (I like to have my screen on max brightness) I thought I’d give it one more stab and I’ve picked up this Boostcase Hybrid Snap Case, which has 2 parts, a slim-fitting case, and an attachable battery sleeve charges the phone. It’s subtle in design, feels nice to touch (it’s matte and grippy).

I’ve had the screen settings set to full brightness and I’ve gone for 1.5 days without a charge so far, very cool! I’m also no longer bothering with sometimes having to press the power button a billion times in order to put my phone to sleep (IE: I just let it auto sleep). This product should see my phone lasting a fair bit longer (I hope!) before having to upgrade to a 6.

I bought it from MobileZap.

Under the radar

40
Birthday Selfie. Still camera shy. Wavy hair from excessive hair twirling.

Then all of a sudden. I’m here. 40.

I never really planned for anything past 40. Does that make me a free spirit?! In keeping with my latest life decisions (to not attend weddings or celebrate birthdays) I’m going under the radar with this one too (boo!).

A gift from Nycola (I love gifts from my models!). Like me, Nycola also loves Japanese culture. She also brought me a duck and potato pie (it’s so yummy!) and I got to keep a massive bunch of roses from our shoot too.

A couple of weeks ago I got a message from my cousin Nycola who was terrified to ask me, but she wanted to shoot. My instant reply was “I thought you’d never ask!” (lol I crack myself up sometimes), but seriously, of-course. She’s a beautiful girl, mother of 3 gorgeous kids with my cousin Fred.

Last weekend I shot a couple, and of-course a few questions came up in regards to shooting a cousin. Whichever way I look at it, it’s been rewarding to push the boundaries within my photography!

We discussed the shoot, and locations, but in the end we just met up at mine, braved the chilly weather and shot in the sun. Was a nice session. Great conversation and I’m really happy with the light in the shots by the tree.

Had an amaaaaazing shoot today with Cam, who I’ve kept in touch with but not seen ever since our first shoot back in September last year. Time flies!!! We’ve managed to postpone more than a few catch ups but both of us made it happen today for shoot #2. Cam brought her boyfriend Ray along, who’s an apprentice tattoo artist. Was fun hanging out with the both of them.

I even had a go at shooting both of them together just for lols (we just threw Ray into the shot, pretty much!). Was definitely awkward. Man I don’t envy wedding photographers! Shooting couples isn’t for me.

Meeting with Toyo Tires

toyo_minto
At the Toyo Tires visitors carpark which is allllll the way out the back.

toyo_framed
This was framed up on the wall in the boardroom. An aerial shot of the Toyo building in Minto. SO HUGE!!!!!

I’ve been a Toyo fan ever since my first set of R888 semi-slicks which I purchased many years ago. I’ve had plenty of sets actually, on various cars (Jazz, MX-5, EG Civic, DC2R, Golf GTI, all of which were daily drivers too). Sure, semi’s aren’t perfect for daily driving duties, they’re noisy and not great in the wet, but this is where the R888 is different to the rest. I find that they warm up DAMN fast on the street. A couple of blocks from home and they’re good to go. I also find them pretty good in the wet (but wet grip gets quite drastically worse as tyres wear out). I also generally just love how fat they look. Fat rubber is where it’s at IMHO. Always has been, always will be. It’s just so tough looking (I hate how weak stretched tyres look).

Anyways, to cut a long story short. I’ve been in discussions with Toyo since putting on a fresh set of R888’s on my GT-R at the end of March. I had my car under their tent at EOMM and got to meet the team. We had a bit of a chat on the night at EOMM. It seems like Toyo has been MIA since they stopped sponsoring the drifting. I’m just really happy that the brand is participating in community related events again.

Today I drove out to their HUGE HQ in Minto for a meeting. I was humbled by some of the discussion we had inside. These guys are pretty hungry to make a comeback, they seem to like what I do, and since I’m already a fan of the brand, sponsorship feels like a really good fit.

So yes! I’m officially sponsored by Toyo. Hopefully I’ll be testing out the new R888R on the GT-R soon and getting more involved with Toyo moving forward. Should be an awesome collaboration. More news and details to come!

MKVR32 Update (it’s all bad news).

gutterrash
Just a bit of an update. It’s all bad news, pretty much!!!! I’m pretty careful with my wheels, but yeahhhhh. This happened. Drivers side. Worst feeling in the world (and yes… I lost sleep!).

rashold
Turns out it happened on the wheel which already had some slight rash on it (which was already there when I bought the car).

mkvr32_toponeauto
Jack from Beyond Limit Autos (who built my car at Ramspeed and is now at Advan Performance in Auburn) has my supercharger parts, but before booking Jack in to service my supercharger I had to do a major service with Dedy at Top One Auto. Long story short, but that was meant to be MY NSX! I had already agreed to a price, and was about to book a plane to go get it, but a mate ended up offering the buyer more, so I bought Jose’s Golf instead!

nsx_spare
The NSX’s spare, so cool!

leaking
First issue. Hood strut is leaking and can’t hold the hood up anymore.

rusty_coilpacks
Now onto some serious problems. The vented bonnet lets water in. Water has been building up around the coil packs and they’ve rusted in place so badly that it’s taken the guy over 4 hours to get them out. Worst thing is one is still stuck!!!!!!!!!!!

rustyas
It gets worse… it’s so rusted up in there that the guys can’t even get a socket in to remove the spark plugs!!!!!!!!!

So, one coil pack is still stuck. Fingers crossed that last one will come out. THEN the guys have to remove the spark plugs. If one of them happens to break on removal I could be in for some serious shit. IE: Engine might have to come out (cylinder head removal).

EDIT: Got a late night call from Dedy at Top One. Great news! All plugs are out! Major service has been done! All good to go! PHEW!

Design VS Art – Why I’m not a designer anymore

designvsart

So today. I got this question thrown at me via Facebook Messenger: “How do your practices differ when creating a commissioned design project to creating art for yourself, i.e do you feel constrained by the perceived difference between design and art?”.

Really good question. For a while there I truly intended to give my clients my best. Sometimes I’d stay up till 3am working on client work, with my fave music up, in my PJ’s, only to have the secretary the next day in the client meeting say she doesn’t like yellow, and eventually having the client have me change things, which in turn makes my work ugly.

This hurts.

A few years of this crap; design by committee (when you present your work to clients and the client gathers opinions from their business partners, secretaries and mothers), uneducated clients (not everyone gets good design), clients who fail to trust me as a designer, it was enough for me to always design with compromise in mind. IE: I never give my clients everything I’ve got anymore. I only put my everything into my own work, which in this case you can call “art”.

So I very rarely do design work for others anymore these days. I suppose I’ve taken being my own boss to new heights?!

Photoshoot with Kaylee

Yesterday I had a shoot with Vietnamese girl Kaylee, who’s 23, still fairly new to Australia, studying Child Care, sharp as a tac and works her ass off at a bar to support herself and her mother. I love that she reached out for me to shoot her in lingerie simply because it’s a thing she wanted to tick off her bucket list! Was a fun shoot. More pics here.
