Test Drive – WRX vs BRZ vs Golf R

nsx
First up I had to check out this NSX which I’ve seen in the window of this dealership for years. It’s a targa (boo). Lovely though, really, what a car.

nsxodo
Low km’s (I thought it might have been brand new with no km’s but I was wrong).

sti
STI in the showroom looking pretty damn aggressive.

wrx
The WRX Pou was testing.

Race mode please!

Yesterday I tagged along with my soon to be flatmate Pou (pronounced ‘Poy’) who has a $50k budget to buy a new car. He’s been driving a manual Toyota RAV4 forever (it’s his first car) and what makes all of this more interesting for me is that Pou’s not a ‘car guy’.

Initially Pou asked me about the new Toyota 86, but that wasn’t going to have any more power than his RAV4, and I thought he’d definitely enjoy something that would whip people off the lights so after some help from Facebook friends we booked in a WRX and a Golf R too.

First up we visited my old mate Charlie at Tynan Subaru in Sutherland. Pou got a big drive in this car, in all sorts of conditions. Being passenger in the WRX as Pou threw it through some 15km hairpins in the twisties scared the shit out of me (pretty sure Charlie would have been scared too lol), but the WRX was a champ, so much grip. I’m truly impressed. The car is so quiet and super comfy too (quite softly sprung), 1st gear is short and doesn’t really go anywhere but grab 2nd and power comes on mid to high which was surprising to me (I thought it would have been more low to mid range power). Pou had a blast driving the WRX.

Next up was the BRZ, which Charlie thought we might as well test considering it’s what Pou originally wanted. Both Charlie and I had to remind Pou not to drive it like he drove the WRX in fear of us crashing! Pou instantly felt more connected to the car, he felt he was sitting lower in the car and he loved the meatier clutch feel and notchy gear shift too. He even compared it to a go kart. A few times when I caught him just cruising around I got him to smash the accelerator through the floor in 3rd gear and yup, no power at all, nothing. I just felt that it was important he realise how truly gutless these cars are in comparison to a WRX and R (turbo vs NA).

We thought he might take the backroads to work in the BRZ, more corners, more fun, but then again he could take the backroads in the WRX too, it’s a tough call.

Next up was Barloworld in Mascot but by the time we got there they were shutting. I opened up my mouth though and next minute we were handed the keys to a new Golf R, in red too of all colours. She looked stunning and took Pou by surprise. Pou instantly realised the interior is a much nicer place to be than the WRX or BRZ. Unfortunately for Pou the car was DSG, which confused him (as expected for all first timers to DSG). Driving an R in auto mode just sux as the car tries to grab 6th gear as soon as possible. We understeered on a big roundabout, tyres protesting quite loudly, the R definitely doesn’t grip as well as a WRX (short wheelbase on the R doesn’t help here). Unfortunately the R is way over the $50k budget and there is no manual until later this year so Pou is booked in the test drive the GTI in manual next weekend (which I think he’ll like more than the R anyways as the GTI’s lighter and should feel a lot more fun to drive than the R). So until next weekend, all is on ice!

500px – 24hrs

500px1

jfox_discover_popular_500px

A little while back Flickr changed their entire interface, and it shat me to tears, lots of people moved over to 500px but I didn’t bother, mainly because I’ve been with Flickr since the very start and I’m lazy like that.

Jess was talking about 500px the other day and I thought I might as well look into it now that I’ve got a newfound hobby for photography. I posted up a status on my facebook asking the photographers out there about which is better, Flickr or 500px, in the end I was convinced to give it a go and I’m glad I have.

Creating an account was as easy as signing in through facebook. I could then import my images directly from Flickr. I had Florida based Photographer Jordan Donnelly on messenger chat and he guided me through what I should and shouldn’t do. Basically he suggested a few people for me to follow, and most importantly he suggested that I only upload my best work (as opposed to anything and everything on Flickr).

I didn’t bother too much with adding descriptions and tags etc. and I didn’t bother promoting my new 500px page either. Within 24hrs I’ve had quite a lot of reach on some of my photographs. 255 faves on my shots, 3,035 views and 32 followers. 500px also promoted 2 of my photos in their DISCOVER section. That’s pretty awesome. So far, so good!

Had an awesome shoot with Britta yesterday. It always helps when you’re shooting someone who’s genuinely interesting (and she’s a mad cat lover too!). I first met Britta a year ago when Hot4’s Magazine shot my MKVR32 Golf, she’s transformed herself so much since then! Both Britta and I were a little hung over, good thing then that we had planned to do a “Lazy Sunday” style shoot. I’ve got a lot more images to come, but for now please enjoy these bedroom shots.

As usual, you can view the high res images on my tumblr: http://justinfox.tumblr.com

This isn’t Happiness

thisisnthappiness

Some of my photos have been featured on This isn’t Happiness, a visually beautiful and at times depressing blog which has been running since I first heard about Tumblr and often voted as one of the best Tumblrs of all time. This isn’t Happiness? Oh but it is!!!

What’s in the bag?

essentials_justinfox_camerabag
Click pic to enlarge.

In a comment on my last blog entry Charlie asked for a rundown of all the gear I pack for shoots. I’ve always loved checking out “what’s in the bag?” style features so I thought why the hell not!

This bag is what I carry daily (to work at Zen Garage). I always carry my laptop and 2 cameras (I’ve been on shoots with other shooters who have come across trouble and had to cancel shoots on the spot, lesson learnt, always pack another camera! If I’m shooting off location I’ll always bring along the Bose Speaker. It’s a bluetooth speaker so sometimes I’ll let the model stream her music onto it if I think it’ll make her feel more comfortable. PS: I do always carry the kit lens that came with the GF6 (I used it to take this shot), it’s useful only for when there’s not enough space for me to fit a girl into frame but I rarely use it at all.

Here’s the packing list:
1. Chrome Niko Pack.
2. Bottled Water.
3. Samyang 7.5mm Fisheye Lens.
4. Battery chargers for both the GF1 & GF6.
5. Panasonic Lumix GF6 with Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 and DSPTCH Straps.
6. Panasonic Lumix GF1 with 20mm Pancake Lens and Panasonic Viewfinder.
7. iblazr LED Flash, Memory Card and USB Stick.
8. Joyetech eVic.
9. The Essentials – Keys, wallet, iPhone.
10. Bose SoundLink III Bluetooth Speaker.
11. Zen Sunnies.
12. Macbook Pro.

DSPTCH Camera Strap

dsptch

In 2012 I bought myself a DSPTCH camera strap for my GF1. It’s a little faded now from all the sun and salt it’s seen over the years but it’s still going strong and has proven to be super reliable so I’ve bought another one for my GF6. They’ve upped their packaging game, but it’s pretty much the exact same product. The quick release buckles on both ends makes it a breeze to remove the strap (which I find gets in the way during photoshoots).

Adventure Time – Picking up my Golf from Beyond Limit Autos

bus
I’m on a bus.

ferry
I’m on a ferry.

ferry2
Hopping off the ferry was amazing. Where in the world was I? Cam river waters, no traffic, no noise… so peaceful I almost felt like I was holidays.

beyondlimitautos
Beyond Limit Autos. Oh, there’s my Golf! And Adam’s too!

mkvr32
All mine again!

lotus
Loved this Lotus Jack was working on. It’s a full resto, chassis up and EFI conversion too.

quads
Quads?! Man this car is going to be amazing when it’s finished.

belt
Jack took some photos for me whilst working on the car. This is the new belt.

fray
The fraying belt damaged some wires. Jack ended up re-doing this wiring loom (he did a really nice job of it too).

underengine
Under the engine, something’s leaking!

leak
Turns out it was a very small part and it’s been leaking on boost so Jack suggests I’ve been losing power (not that I’ve noticed though). It has now been replaced!

shaft
This is the main issue. It’s the shaft of a bearing on the left side of the engine (part of the supercharger kit). The hard surface has worn right down. Jack is sourcing a replacement now from overseas so I’ll have to go back in when parts arrive.

I was wondering how the hell I was going to get to Rydalmere to pick up my Golf. The guys on the VWGolf Forums suggested I catch a Ferry as BLA are apparently really close to Rydalmere Wharf. They weren’t lying! BLA is literally the closest shop to the Ferry wharf!

Was such a nice day to be out in the sun, so warm and considering I never catch public transport, it was a bit of a treat! Jack from Beyond Limit Autos was awesome, great to finally meet him (the guys on the forum talk very highly of him and he is the guy who built my car when he worked at Ramspeed).

Art Magazine

art_magazine_justinfox

My feature is up on Art Magazine! It’s in German though, so I’ll paste the answers to their questions below!

What excites you about the subject of the nude?
As a prepubescent kid I was fascinated by the nude form, both male and female. My mother ran a fashion store in the city and on weekends I’d spend it at the shop, in the stock room flicking through women’s magazines and gawking at nude/semi-nude figures. Throughout high school I was infatuated with girls, nude magazines and art. Post high school (late 90s to mid 2000’s) I spent many years using the female form in my digital art but my first nude photoshoot was in my professional graphic design years. It was with my girlfriend at the time and it took place after drinking a lot of red wine. It felt really cheeky, very much spontaneous and in-the-moment. The results were amazingly tasteful and artistic, as a couple we were so proud of the images that we published them online. Over the years I’ve had various partners, most of which were willing to be my nude muses and whilst I don’t specifically try to gun after a nude shoots these days, when the opportunity does pop up I’m all over it (for arts sake!).

How far would you go? Are there any taboos?
I’d love to be able to honestly say that I don’t care about what others think, but unfortunately, at times, I do care. I like to think I have a pretty good reputation out there as a professional creative, and founder of various communities. There are things that I love on a very personal level (drugs, sexual fetishes, you get the drift…), and I feel that if revealed, some of these things would split opinions in regards to my image so in the end I do make compromises, and have yet to really go completely “uncensored” and doubt I ever could.

When is a nude picture considered a piece of art?
I’ve had very heated debates about this with creative professionals. A while back I got to meet Natacha Merritt, who takes very intense self portraits, many which are very graphically sexual. She spoke at AGIDEAS conference in Melbourne and her whole talk revolved around what is art and what is porn, yet it left most of the audience confused. Her work is art. I have no doubt about it, but the fact that a lot of people consider her work as porn just solidifies for me that not everyone out there “gets it”. I don’t have a black and white answer between the difference between art and porn (I tend to love living in the grey) but I believe ultimately that what is art and what is not is down to personal interpretation.

Who or what inspires you? Are there any photographers or artists that inspires your work?
I’ve always taken inspiration from myself, my past, my upbringing, my culture and my family. I identified very early on that it was pointless to be inspired by other creatives. When you do that you’re just copying and not understanding the real reasons as to why their work looks amazing, thus adding to the creative confusion out there. If you instead take inspiration from yourself you’re more likely to create something original as there is no other you in this world. Having said all that I am in absolutely awe of many creatives out there; photographers, artists, designers, typographers, etc. both locally and internationally.

Were there any mortifying moment while you were photographing?
Not to date! I’ve been on shoots where the main photographers have had technical issues with gear which ended shoots prematurely. I shoot in natural light so I only need myself, the model and my camera. I have no remote flash units or lights to worry about and I always carry 2 cameras to a shoot in case one fails.

How important is staging and coincidence for your pictures?
My favourite style of photography is what I like to call “in-the-moment’ style photography. “Off-the-cuff” and spontaneous. That kind of photography with a model doesn’t come by chance too easily though so lately I’ve been working on ideas with girls before getting together for shoots. My shoots are falling into different categories these days. I run a fashion label (Zen Garage) so there are straight out sexy look book style fashion shoots, then there are the shoots which have a concept where the photos need to be viewed in a chronological order as they tell a story, then there are my art shoots which may take inspiration from one single source, be it another artists work (take for example the shoot I did with Krystal which was inspired by an Araki photograph) or the model herself (her ideas for the shoot).

What projects or dreams would you like to fulfill in your artistic practice?
I’d love to collaborate with other artists I look up to, and also brands I look up to but so long as I’m able to create what I like to create then I’m happy. I spent many years as a graphic designer creating work for others. CD-ROM presentations, web sites, print design, branding design etc. Some of it was satisfying, but most of it wasn’t. These days I’m very selective about what commercial work I take on, and with photography I’m hoping to keep it as a passion project for the love and not for the money.
