Cleaner Wrasse

Yesterday I bought a fish I’ve always wanted.

He adds a lot of difference to the tank in the way he swims (love how he glides through the water). He’s not gotten close to cleaning the long standing tank mates. Blue Tang is now king of the tank and last night he was giving the new guy some attitude, so too my flame angel but today they’re all getting along a lot better.

I’ve been worried about keeping one of these fish as I’ve read that they often starve once there’s no more parasites to clean off other fishes. I’ve also read that they tend to harass other fishes once there’s no more parasites left to eat too (due to starving and desperately seeking more food). I had 3 to choose from in the shop (a small shop in Bondi Junction) and I chose the most colourful one as well as the most aggressive (he seemed very insanely happy to greet me up against the glass).

This morning I fed a little flake and he’s eating it at the surface. I just tried a block of mysid and he’s gobbling that up too (phew!). I also just did a water change and he bit my arm! Looks like he’ll be just fine :)

Aquarium update

The salty tank is settling in nicely. Water parameters are pretty stable and I should now be able to get away with just testing the water chemistry once a month (in case I need to make tweaks to my dosing computer).

I bought a couple of small clams (I love clams!) and a purple monti from an online store called Coral Crazy. His online shop looks clean and it was so easy to use (refreshing!). Turns out Andrew (the owner) lives local to me so he even dropped off my order himself and gave me a couple of free frags too. Top guy, super passionate and clearly in it for the love not the money (he’s a sparky by trade). I’m pretty sure I’ll be buying more goodies from him in future!!!

Albert Namatjira inspired Australian aquarium landscape

An original watercolor by Albert Namatjira, painted around 1954.

Albert Namatjira (28 July 1902 – 8 August 1959) is perhaps Australia’s best known Aboriginal painter, with his work forming one of the foundations of contemporary Indigenous Australian art.

Christina’s Dad Tony let me at his old tank in 2007. Christina and I managed to turn it from a dark scary algae breeding box into this lovely tank. It’s been doing great but he’s ready to go the next level and I’ve been enlisted to help!

Tony’s goal is to create a tank visually inspired by Albert Namatjira’s Australian landscape paintings. A lot of his work features a tree as a focal point in the foreground (usually far left or right) and blue mountain scapes in the distance. Re-creating the depth of his paintings will be a great challenge.

I say “I” a lot but this really is a team effort. Christina and Tony are in the boat with me and they’re both very much going to be sharing the driving.

A few weeks ago we ordered a 4x2x2 tank from the same guy that has been building tanks since my Dad was around and in business (Adrian from Ingleburn) and it was delivered last Saturday. Same 4ft width as his current tank (it’ll be sitting in the same place), taller but a lot deeper. The extra depth will really help us with trying to achieve the depth found in Namatjira’s paintings.

4x2x2 eurobraced (no glass panel on top to block the light) and super clear starphire glass all round. Like a bathtub. It looks so much bigger than his old tank (because it is!). The depth makes all the difference.

That same Saturday we went rock shopping at Bonsai Environment in Vineyard. Amazing shop with the most ridiculously inspiring bonsai garden, no photos allowed though, such a shame!

The rocks were about $40/rock so we bought a few. We might end up needing less, or more, we’re not sure!

More updates as they come!

2010 MS Australia – Sydney to Gong Ride

The boys at St. Peters Station for a lazy late 7.30AM (we decided to ignore our differing allocated times and start together). Waking up this morning to birds chirping was a good sign, looking out the window I saw that the sun was out. Despite the rain forecast it was a beautiful day!

Seeing Jing in tights took some getting used to (lol).

Brandon and Felix at Loftus Oval. At this point I was completely gone. My groin was very sore, shoulders too and my legs were jelly. In a few past rides I’ve not even stopped here! Considering Loftus is the 1/3 way point. I knew I was in for a hard day.

The view is the reward at Stanwell Tops. I somehow managed to make it up and out of the national park. I knew I was unfit after not being on the bike for a year but I didn’t expect it to be so hard. I relied solely on mental strength and even then I was completely crushed. I thought so many times about hopping off the bike and walking up some the hills. I somehow managed to stay on though and made it up without walking.

The boys at this stage were really starting to wait for me. I was about 10 minutes or more behind them.

In so so so much pain!

I love this bridge so much. Left is the ocean, right is an amazing high cliff face.

The finish just never came. The last 4-5km’s were the hardest and I’m lucky I had the boys urging me on. Brandon especially who really helped me to make it.

Richie had a great ride.

Eddie, Jing, Richie, Felix, Brandon and myself.

This had to be the hardest ride of my entire life.

I’ve never had a cramp before, ever, but I felt my right calf tighten up every time I tried to get out of the saddle and mash it so that forced me to stay seated. At times I had to just look down at the road and take it one pedal at a time. I had my BMU sticker there, it helped in an odd way. I also thought of my mate Sean who was diagnosed with MS this year and I also thought about my generous sponsors and their messages of encouragement. That combined with the BMU guys waiting for me at each main stop saw me through to the finish.

I’ve got to say I’m shocked at how much fitness you can lose in just one year of not exercising. Scary when you really think about it. It’s a tough lesson learnt for me. I’ve got to get fit again and this time stay fit!

Night before the big ride

War paint is on.

Thanks to Graeme at endlesspedal.com.au I’ve got No 5. Chain-L on too. I applied it directly onto my chain as my chain is new. Graeme says the application should last about 1000km (ie: overkill for the 90km tomorrow!).

Also, thanks to MC Cyclery I’ve got myself some bibs and some gel gloves to make the ride (hopefully) less painful!

Rain or shine I’m getting ready for tomorrow’s Sydney to Gong ride. With the help of my generous sponsors I’ve managed to raise $550 for MS! I’m pretty happy with that! :)

Tastevin

Watch out for the tree! We thought we were going to be super early but finding a park in Darlinghurst proved nearly impossible! We ended up with a park 4 blocks away.

Felix.

Di.

Flamin’ Crepe Suzette! Being a Crepe Suzette fan I couldn’t resist!

Last night Suga and I were invited to dinner by Felix and Di. We’re going to be the MC’s at their wedding later this year and dinner was to introduce us to the bridal team (2 couples, nice people!).

Di chose Tastevin, a lovely little French restaurant in Darlinghurst. Everything was perfect from the very first impressions. Cozy atmosphere (very Pari!) and friendly service (Bonsoir!). The French bread (with French butter!) was so so so fresh, my steak was so good it reminded me of that scene in the Matrix…I know it’s not real but it’s so good I don’t care!

$50/person and up there with the best!

VWG Pizza night

I’ve had a few big dramas on the forums I run recently so it was a breath of fresh air to just get off the PC and head out to do some offline forum stuff.

The monthly VWGolf.net.au Pizza night was held at The Bavarian last night at Fox Studios. VWG’s developing a very clicky inner circle, heaps of laughs, great guys the lot of them.
