Always happy to share process: I’ve finally got started on my piece for RISE EXHIBITION – I’m only a couple of hours in but it’s been amazing using charcoal from the burnt trees as a medium. All proceeds from the art works sold is going out to to charities supporting the firefighters, people that lost their homes & wildlife. #RiseExhibition #RiseAustralia

Charcoal

charcoal_rise_exhibition

So you may shoot me with your words
You may cut me with your eyes
And I’ll rise
I’ll rise
I’ll rise

Got delivery of a bag of burnt trees from the fires which I’ll (and all the other artists invited) use to make an artwork for RISE Exhibition. Really excited to be working with charcoal (it’s been a long while!). Really honoured to be a part of such an amazing show!

RISE EXHIBITION. An exhibition using charcoal from the trees burnt in bushfires as a medium to create the works. This is huge! I’m honoured and absolutely over the moon to have been invited to contribute!

Sloth mode

Just wanted to thank all my Patrons for the ongoing support.

Late last year I resigned from both my businesses. Despite both of them being creative ventures I’ve learned that design and corporate culture just isn’t for me anymore. Going forwards, art is where the heart is.

I’ve had a REALLY slow start to the year. Sloth mode for sure, but I’ve been shooting and organising new shoots. Just this week an American model who’s visiting Australia next month reached out to me for a shoot, and I’ve also been invited to join an all star cast of international artists to create an artwork for a show for the fires (we actually get to use charcoal from the burnt trees as our medium, more on this in the next post!).

It’s a small world. I’ve had SO many cases of 7 degrees of separation and coincidences in my life that they rarely surprise me anymore. What I tend to do these days is just acknowledge that I’m not in control of my own life, and to just embrace these instances.

On my recent trip to Africa I met Jane, who, on returning to Sydney, let me know about an art show that a good friend of hers Chen Lu was putting on at yuill|crowley gallery in Potts Point. She thought Chen and I had a lot of things in common, and that we’d get along. She sent me a link to his web site, and to my surprise I had just visited his site a few weeks earlier when I was looking for site design inspiration. The site was made by Zann St Pierre, my Australian INfront business partner, small world!

I invited my Spacewalk team mates to Chens show and we made a day of it. Chen designs objects, furniture and spaces. From his site:

In each project Lu starts with Malevich’s black square and within the boundary of this infinity he questions or proposes another way of seeing and experiencing our relationship with the world around us.

When Lu applies this exercise to objects they develop an ambiguous function. Lu’s objects invite interaction intended to stir the users’ imagination. The abstract forms challenge object-memory, promoting creative thinking and personal insight.

Lu has produced works for Hermés, Paspaley Pearls, Monument Magazine, Vogue Living, Belle, Art and Australia, Billy Kwong (Surry Hills), Simon Johnson, Bill Granger, Ondene, Broached Commissions, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art (UCCA), and Yuill Crowley Gallery.

Chen is awesome. His work is too (find lots more of it on his site linked below). All photos above by Nick.

More jailhouse tatts!

Hanging out with one of my kind tonight. At some stage (after a fair bit of red wine) the eBay tattoo kit came out to play (lol) and Kristi jumped at the opportunity to give me some ink (apparently she’s wanted to tattoo herself/someone for years!). She did a WAY better job than I did on myself last time! We shot some stuff too, will share some of those next week.
