Tora Sumi

I’m spending the day at Tora Sumi in sunny Balmain today. Sergio’s getting work done, so too Danie Kara Zheng.

The OFIM boys are shooting a video as well. If you’re in the area, drop in and say hi!

My 2nd NA8C

Such a cool key. I love it! Research tells me it’s an end of production blank key for NA made in Japan made by Royal Clover, a company that was founded in 1959.

So here she is. Car was delivered this morning and I drove it to work today. It’s got a new soft top (glass rear window) which is great, and the engine runs really strong. Soft OEM suspension feels vague in corners, brakes feel awesome and the exhaust is damn loud (it does have an APEXi Exhaust Control Valve though which is rad!).

I’ll admit that I’ve not got a clear idea of what I want to do with it. Initial thoughts are bolt-on flares, something I’ve always wanted to do to an MX-5. Problem then is I’ll need more power to have fun in it and I’d rather not have to do too much engine work straight off the bat. I’ve also got first dibs on a set of TE37V’s 9inch wide -15 offset, so yes, it’s tempting…

The other thing I’m wary of is following the same exact modifying path as my last MX-5, which is pretty hard to resist both visually and from a function perspective too. Watanabes, coilovers, headers, mania intake, black lips, black hardtop etc.

My 2nd Mazda MX-5 NA8C Roadster

Got lucky with plates AGAIN!

Those that know me know that I praise the MX-5 a LOT. I often miss my old NA8C Clubman which I sold back in 2006 and have always planned to be back in one at some point in time (THE car that taught me how to drive!).

I’ve been hunting down both 911’s and an NA8C furiously (on carsales daily) for the past year. I’ve low balled a lot of NA owners lately and have come close to buying a few (in most cases I was only $500-1000 off asking price).

2 nights ago I low balled a guy pretty hard. I almost got him, but he said he’d like to sleep on my offer. That night, in excitement, I got on myplates and punched in “NA8C” (the chassis code). Amazingly it was available so I took it.

Later this morning I’ll close the deal on an NA8C which I tried to buy last year (but my offer was too low). Looking forward to driving the new car to work later today!

Field Trip Sydney 2013

And we’re on again! Field Trip conference will be held at in Sydney on the 30th of August 2013 @ Monkey Baa in Darling Quarter.

If you’ve often wondered how the hell do creative people create the things they create, then Field Trip’s the conference for you. We invite our speakers to the stage to not only talk about where they’ve come from and what they do, but to actually show you, on the big screen, how they create their work from start to end (essentially giving away all their secrets!).

Tickets are on sale now, fingers crossed it’ll be another sell out event!

YAS-101 Yamaha Soundbar

YAS-101 Yamaha Soundbar.

A while back I bought a cheap Kogan TV which was very much a “that’ll do” purchase at the time. It’s been OK except for it’s weak sound from it’s little in-built speakers (the sound so tinny and weak that max volume is hardly audible during some movies). I’ve been meaning to buy a sound system for it, just haven’t been motivated to until now.

I initially looked into a surround sound system, but really hated the idea of having ugly black boxes all over the room. Then I stumbled upon soundbars, the new thing it seems. Thin, minimalist.

I opted to get this YAS-101 Yamaha Soundbar because I trust the Yamaha brand, it was cheap and it was an all in one (ie: no separate sub box).

It came with an optical cable to connect directly to my Foxtel box (not sure how to get it to work with my DVD player, or Wii or Playstation though and my TV doesn’t have optical out) and within 5 minutes I was up and running.

The unit sits in front of the TV’s IR receiver but the remote control signal is relayed to the IR flasher on the back, ensuring the signal to the TV is unaffected and best of all I can make do without an additional remote control as this unit has a learning function which worked perfectly with my TV remote control (which now controls the volume and on/off of this unit).

Sound is better in every way. Rich and full of depth in comparison to the TV’s built-in speakers. It has a feature called “UniVolume” which maintains a constant volume, great for automatically reducing the volume of loud advertisements (so good). It’s also got a surround sound feature which works really well (tested on Snow White and the Huntsman which was on TV last night, sounded fantastic). Another feature is “Clear Voice” which does a great job of just increasing the volume and clarity of voices (worked a treat and tested whilst watching UFC!).
