Melbourne Day 2

We now officially haunt the cafe’s on Degraves for breakfast every trip.

We hooked up with one of Christina’s work mates and checked out the Tim Burton exhibit at Fed Square. Massive exhibit which featured a lot of sketches and work from when Burton was a little kid (which was totally awesome to see). So many “untitled” works. I can’t say I’m a huge Burton fan but I enjoyed seeing so much process. Highlights for me were reading hand written letters he writes to actors on set (looks like he doesn’t email or text!) and seeing a lot of the amazing work that his team do. IE: The teams that make his cute sketches reality really are just as amazing as Burton himself.

That night we had a combined VWGolf.net.au + JDMST meet at Melbourne’s Docklands. John/Pharkus and his wife picked us up from the hotel to take us there which was super nice of him.

You never know what’s going to rock up to a JDMST meet. This old skool Corolla was awesome.

The Golfs.

Silver MKIV so clean it still had it’s warranty sticker on it.

Terrence/Big Yellow’s beasty R32.

The Integras.

Sugoi. So hot huh? Girl owner too.

Nice S2.

The lads.

Small meet but great company!

The Press Club

Suga and I booked a dinner at The Press Club months ago when we saw it on MasterChef. I have to admit I had my reservations and no-one is pickier than I am when it comes to food. I’m afraid of hype and what I hate the most is paying heaps of cash for crap food. It’s sad but a lots of ‘fine dining’ from all over the world has failed to impress me.

A stroll away from our hotel. The Press Club.

We were greeted by the lady who runs the floor (we recognised her from the show). She was awesome and gave us this welcoming card.

George’s quote on the menu.

We went À la carte. It turns out there was a new menu (not on their site yet). Christina’s chicken dish was so yum. A poached egg and the crispy little bits are fried chicken which made the healthy poached chicken underneath taste so naughty.

I had the Kingfish. The flavours of the fish, calamari and kipfler potatoes just went together insanely well. He outdid any Japanese fish dish I’ve ever had (and any seafood dish I’ve had from recent memory!).

The lamb is his signature dish so we both couldn’t pass it up. Roast loin, 16hr glazed neck and almond skordalia (a lot like hummus). Too good. TOO GOOD!!!

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better. A waitress sprayed rose scent in the air above us and George’s Aphrodite came out. ART!!!

This dessert came out too, lovely but nowhere near as special as the Aphrodite dish above.

Seeing old letterpress letters surprised me as I didn’t assume The Press Club had a literal connection to typography & print. Massive bill but totally 100% worth it!

Melbourne Day 1

Christina and I just got back from Melbourne where we celebrated our 4th year together. We got back last night and I had a track day out at Wakefield today. I’m buggered! I’ve got a lot of pics to go through. I’ll start with day #1!

We ran into my sisters friend/client Michael at the airport, turns out he was on our flight! He also offered us a lift into the city as his partner Kerri was picking him up (together they run fashion label Amar from Sydney).

I was happy to see Melbourne now has a bike share system. Go Melbourne!

We pimped it and decided to stay at the Westin right in town.

Christina trying on some Melbourne Cup fascinators.

My mate Andrew who runs Semi-Permanent let me know that he had a show at the GPO so we checked it out.

Later that night I had a Bond style Vespa Martini and what came next was epic. I’m saving it for a new post!

Modern Pet update

The products for Modern Pet (a business I’m running with my sister and our other halves) are slowly coming in and we’ve just bought a cheap eBay light tent set-up to help with the product shots.

80cm light tent and lights all delivered for $130. The lights are awesome but the tent itself isn’t as white as I thought it would be, a little too thin, so thin that you can actually see the wooden floor through the tent.

My little assistant Mia couldn’t help but jump straight into the tent!

So here’s a shot un-edited. It’s not bad actually. With a more solid white floor under the products it should be a lot better (I’m thinking just white carboard will do).

And here’s a shot very roughly edited in Photoshop. No amount of levels/curves was going to work completely. I had to literally erase a lot of the shadow work by hand. I timed myself on this and it took me 10 minutes.

Aquarium update

Nitrates are finally at 0! I don’t think they’ve ever been this low. Water is very very cloudy and smelly too. Yesterday I added a bag of carbon and the smell has gone away but the water is still cloudy. I’m hoping it’ll clear up by itself over the next few days.

My Uncle Tekky came around to test fit the hood he made.

The whole front panel opens up.

A sturdy and concealed shelf for the LED’s with bevelled edges for maximum light.

I then got busy with a screwdriver, hammer and crowbar and managed to get all the decorative trimming off.

I also ripped off that ugly black plastic corner trim for the cleaner ADA look.

Problems: The lights are sitting too far back of the tank and need to come forward about 9cm. That means he’s got to take it all apart, rip off the sides and pretty much put it all back together again. Lucky we did the test fit before painting though.

Ozhonda

Ozhonda is Australia’s largest Honda Forum and they’ve just updated their VBulletin software and skin. Winode (founder and owner of Ozhonda) asked me if I’d like to re-design their banner and I was more than happy to oblige.

Easy laps at the Park

Suga and I are trying to keep up our Monday morning rides at Centennial Park. This morning we hooked up with Richie as well as my old mate Eugene (who runs a Trek bicycle dealership overseas) and his mate Paul.

Eugene and I go way back, we grew up in the same apartment as babies and we hung out all throughout high school years. He’s responsible for getting me into bikes and it’s so cool to know he’s just as into bikes as ever. I gave him one of my Bike T’s today and he brought out a bike that he had stored at his Mum’s place. The first ever dual suspension Trek, carbon frame too!

1995 Trek Y22.

A few years ago they widened the bicycle path but some parts are really bumpy. They really should re-surface the entire park!

There was a group of school girls there today and one of them stacked in front of us. Eugene (reppin the Bike T!) was quick to pull over and give the girl a hand up.

It’s spring! Big mama came right up to us to say G’day and her fluffy little babies followed.

So cute!

Ouchies

Feeling seedy and hung over Christina and I thought we’d better get some sun and yesterday we went to Botany Bay to collect some sea snails for Mr Mantis to eat.

Ouchies! Christina had a fall on the rocks.

I love rock pooling. Something Dad used to take me to do every week when I was a little kid (he’d go fishing and I’d play in the rock pools). There wasn’t much life in the rock pools though, water is still too cold.

This morning I broke out the test kits and tested my water parameters (I very rarely test it). My parameters are as follows:

Salinity: 1.027
KH: 13
pH: 8.4
Phosphate: 0.1ppm
Nitrate: 10ppm
Calcium 350ppm

They’re really quite good parameters so I’m super happy.

Also, my skimmer went nuts last night and it’s pulling out a lot of crap lately. All good signs!

Mantis Shrimp tank update

In situ.

Still a mess (for now).

Live rock.

In other good news my nitrates have come down!

I’ve placed an order with Age of Aquariums for the ADA tank (a hang on back filter, led clip on lamp and a nano heater too). I’ve also added some live rock from the main display tank.

Jess’ 19th

Jess had her 19th at the Löwenbräu last night and Christina and I caught the bus in (something we haven’t done in ages!) so we could get tanked. My mission was to keep up with the 19yr olds but I’ve cut down on the booze so much the past few weeks and my tolerance has dropped big time. I was smashed after two 1litre jugs!

MMMango.

B’day girl Jess and Suga (excuse freaky guy in the background).

Random!

Me, Jess, Suga and Norman (red flush!).
