Zen Garage Leichhardt is now closed for good

6055136339_7b59cb8886_z
A photo I took when we first inspected the warehouse space in Leichhardt.

ZEN LEICHHARDT STORE IS NOW CLOSED FOR GOOD.

It’s been a few months coming, and we’ve kept it under wraps as best we could but for over a year we’ve been looking for a new venue and sadly we’ve failed to find the right space. Our lease is up (has been up for a while now) and we’ve had to make a very hard decision, one that none of us have taken lightly, but the decision has been made and we’re letting go of our Leichhardt store.

It’s been an amazing 3 years, opening up with a queue of people on day 1, a plethora of events, special guests, many who have become family and let’s not forget our sick Saturday hangs.

We’d like to sincerely thank everyone who dropped by at some point in the last 3 years. It’s been fucking amazing. Zen Garage will live on, our online shop will continue to run and we’ll soon have even more next level Zen products than ever. Of-course expect us to host and participate at even more events now that we’re not chained to the shop!!!

The Zen Crew.
Justin, Robert & Sergio.

On a personal side note, and completely my own observations and opinions: I can’t understand how ANY small businesses in Australia survive. Online, sure, no overheads, no worries, but having a bricks and mortar business? Forget it! Our insurance incase someone hurt themselves in our space was more than our rent!!!!

We’ve said it so many times before, we’re doing it for the love, but when the government takes so much from your business you’ve got to wonder, 3 years in, whether the love could soon run out.

I’m sad, but at the same time SUPER excited about putting the money saved from closing the physical store back into Zen, big time! A quick trip to Japan next month to energise, then I’m going to fucking slay 2015!!!

Great news to kick off this miserably cold and grey day. My photography has been featured on French blog “Whitezine” which has been around since 2009. Props to Joseph Ayoub, the site’s founder on both the feature, and on keeping his blog running strong all this time.

BEST OF AUTO – Volume #01

gil_folk

A couple of weeks ago I put a call out to get Automotive Photographers to submit their images for a feature on Zen in an aim to get more traffic to their web sites and Instagram followers.

I’ve always been a massive supporter of the little guy. Most if not all of the creative projects I’ve birthed have been about encouraging young people to create, and giving them a platform to get their work published, sometimes literally on the very same page as some of the world’s best. That goes a long way, seeing your work published right next to your heroes work.

In regards to photography I’ve seen first hand what a little encouragement can do, some of my fave photographers out there right now weren’t great at all when I first started promoting their work, now they’re fucking amazing.

So I knew there would be some great entries! BEST OF AUTO – Best of Automotive Photography Volume #01 is now live! Thanks and congrats to all photographers who submitted a photo!

Spotted on theCHIVE

thechive

Forgot to mention, a photo of mine has been spotted on theCHIVE, a site I’d heard of before but never visited. I just took a look, it’s one of those ‘funny images’ sites, probably most popular with young guys. They’ve got over a million facebook fans, which is pretty impressive, what isn’t quite impressive though is they didn’t credit me for using my shot of Jasmine snacking on Nutella in my kitchen! Not exactly upset about it, but would have loved the spike in traffic!

Another Day Another Shoot! Quite a while back Dale from DM Motorsport (who worked the wheel alignment on my MX5) asked me if I’d be keen to shoot his girlfriend Elissa. We never managed to hook it up until today.

Turns out Elissa’s studying graphic design, she also work part time as a Hooters Girl! Surprisingly it was a really tough shoot. Low light which I’m still not 100% comfortable in, and Elissa was super nervous (despite us both sharing an interest in graphic design and me talking my head off as usual!!!). I do pride myself on making my models feel comfortable, and have had such great feedback from the girls I’ve shot with in regards to this, but Elissa’s not a model and I’m not that great with direction, that and the low light made for a lot of shots I just couldn’t use.

In the end I’m glad we moved from the bedroom into the lounge room where I got Elissa to just sit, chill and play with her phone. I took myself out of her face, whacked the 25mm lens on and stood quite far back to capture some of the shots above, which I’m really happy with actually. Little lesson in persistence for me!

Test Drive – WRX vs BRZ vs Golf R

nsx
First up I had to check out this NSX which I’ve seen in the window of this dealership for years. It’s a targa (boo). Lovely though, really, what a car.

nsxodo
Low km’s (I thought it might have been brand new with no km’s but I was wrong).

sti
STI in the showroom looking pretty damn aggressive.

wrx
The WRX Pou was testing.

wrxinside
Inside with Charlie at the wheel.

brz
The BRZ we tested.

golfr
Golf R looking great in red.

racemode
Race mode please!

Yesterday I tagged along with my soon to be flatmate Pou (pronounced ‘Poy’) who has a $50k budget to buy a new car. He’s been driving a manual Toyota RAV4 forever (it’s his first car) and what makes all of this more interesting for me is that Pou’s not a ‘car guy’.

Initially Pou asked me about the new Toyota 86, but that wasn’t going to have any more power than his RAV4, and I thought he’d definitely enjoy something that would whip people off the lights so after some help from Facebook friends we booked in a WRX and a Golf R too.

First up we visited my old mate Charlie at Tynan Subaru in Sutherland. Pou got a big drive in this car, in all sorts of conditions. Being passenger in the WRX as Pou threw it through some 15km hairpins in the twisties scared the shit out of me (pretty sure Charlie would have been scared too lol), but the WRX was a champ, so much grip. I’m truly impressed. The car is so quiet and super comfy too (quite softly sprung), 1st gear is short and doesn’t really go anywhere but grab 2nd and power comes on mid to high which was surprising to me (I thought it would have been more low to mid range power). Pou had a blast driving the WRX.

Next up was the BRZ, which Charlie thought we might as well test considering it’s what Pou originally wanted. Both Charlie and I had to remind Pou not to drive it like he drove the WRX in fear of us crashing! Pou instantly felt more connected to the car, he felt he was sitting lower in the car and he loved the meatier clutch feel and notchy gear shift too. He even compared it to a go kart. A few times when I caught him just cruising around I got him to smash the accelerator through the floor in 3rd gear and yup, no power at all, nothing. I just felt that it was important he realise how truly gutless these cars are in comparison to a WRX and R (turbo vs NA).

We thought he might take the backroads to work in the BRZ, more corners, more fun, but then again he could take the backroads in the WRX too, it’s a tough call.

Next up was Barloworld in Mascot but by the time we got there they were shutting. I opened up my mouth though and next minute we were handed the keys to a new Golf R, in red too of all colours. She looked stunning and took Pou by surprise. Pou instantly realised the interior is a much nicer place to be than the WRX or BRZ. Unfortunately for Pou the car was DSG, which confused him (as expected for all first timers to DSG). Driving an R in auto mode just sux as the car tries to grab 6th gear as soon as possible. We understeered on a big roundabout, tyres protesting quite loudly, the R definitely doesn’t grip as well as a WRX (short wheelbase on the R doesn’t help here). Unfortunately the R is way over the $50k budget and there is no manual until later this year so Pou is booked in the test drive the GTI in manual next weekend (which I think he’ll like more than the R anyways as the GTI’s lighter and should feel a lot more fun to drive than the R). So until next weekend, all is on ice!

500px – 24hrs

500px1

jfox_discover_popular_500px

A little while back Flickr changed their entire interface, and it shat me to tears, lots of people moved over to 500px but I didn’t bother, mainly because I’ve been with Flickr since the very start and I’m lazy like that.

Jess was talking about 500px the other day and I thought I might as well look into it now that I’ve got a newfound hobby for photography. I posted up a status on my facebook asking the photographers out there about which is better, Flickr or 500px, in the end I was convinced to give it a go and I’m glad I have.

Creating an account was as easy as signing in through facebook. I could then import my images directly from Flickr. I had Florida based Photographer Jordan Donnelly on messenger chat and he guided me through what I should and shouldn’t do. Basically he suggested a few people for me to follow, and most importantly he suggested that I only upload my best work (as opposed to anything and everything on Flickr).

I didn’t bother too much with adding descriptions and tags etc. and I didn’t bother promoting my new 500px page either. Within 24hrs I’ve had quite a lot of reach on some of my photographs. 255 faves on my shots, 3,035 views and 32 followers. 500px also promoted 2 of my photos in their DISCOVER section. That’s pretty awesome. So far, so good!

Had an awesome shoot with Britta yesterday. It always helps when you’re shooting someone who’s genuinely interesting (and she’s a mad cat lover too!). I first met Britta a year ago when Hot4’s Magazine shot my MKVR32 Golf, she’s transformed herself so much since then! Both Britta and I were a little hung over, good thing then that we had planned to do a “Lazy Sunday” style shoot. I’ve got a lot more images to come, but for now please enjoy these bedroom shots.

As usual, you can view the high res images on my tumblr: http://justinfox.tumblr.com

This isn’t Happiness

Some of my photos have been featured on This isn’t Happiness, a visually beautiful and at times depressing blog which has been running since I first heard about Tumblr and often voted as one of the best Tumblrs of all time. This isn’t Happiness? Oh but it is!!!
