Nuvo 16 – OMFG, not another tank?!

11886142_10153656626463203_1705121599990747561_o
I saw this advertisement for a complete Nuvo 16 aquarium setup on Facebook about 3 weeks ago and low balled the guy $500. He didn’t reply for some time, but eventually he did and said no, which was fine as I really don’t think I need another tank!!!

He then reduced the price to $650 for the lot about a week or so ago, bargain! I messaged him again to say my offer at $500 still stands. Another week went by and yesterday he got in touch with me and said I could have it for $500 so I dropped everything on the spot and picked it up (with help from Krysti! Cheers big ears!).

insituu
I put the tank downstairs in my man cave, but then I thought back to a time when I had a 4ft tank in my man cave and honestly… I really didn’t look at it much whilst I was working down there, and changing water would be annoying as I’d have to go up and down the stairs, so I thought I’d set this tank up in the lounge room.

insitu_nuvo16
Tank in situ.

reactor
The deal came with lights, heater, ghost skimmer, spin stream nozzles and this sexy little reactor.

basket
Also upgraded media baskets on both sides.

sand
And a brand new bag of live sand. Nice!

ankinsitu_nuvo16
Sand and natural sea water went in last night, this morning this is how she looked (bag instructions said not to rinse!). I had floss in the media chambers but damn this stuff is dusty!!!

Yeahhhhhh I bought ANOTHER tank! Fuck! I’d actually been eyeing a Nuvo 16 on eBay for some time. They’re an older version now, so there’s a local warehouse selling the tank only for $180 on clearance, then this deal came along and I couldn’t refuse!

I definitely don’t do things by halves, huh?!

The loose plan for this tank was a rockpool intertidal zone biotope. IE: Everything that goes in it has to be collected from local rock pools around my area. How it’s going to be scaped I have no idea. The seller did give me a big bucket of live rock and I have a lot of dead rock left over too but I’ll hold off on using the rock for now.

PS: I’ve caught 2 of the larger ghost shrimp from the display tank (by hand too those cheeky buggers aren’t afraid of me at all!) and threw them into this Nuvo 16 this morning, both doing fine!

I went to support Nana who was invited to be a part of a panel discussion at this year’s inaugural CURVY Women’s Creative Conference at aMBUSH, Central Park.

There were 8 women on the panel and the topic was “The Art of making it”. The session kicked off with everyone introducing themselves with their story on how they got to where they are now (Nana’s story was particularly awesome, it really came from the heart).

Topics touched on Art vs. Design, making a living doing what you love. Having to do your time with crap work to make ends meet/gain experience. Business; Art schools should teach business, how to invoice, connections to legal help with agreements, etc. The topic of kids and a lack of time was brought up too; priority shifts as well as success stories of mothers who are creative directors at the top of their game. Social media, Instagram, how do Artists keep up with the pace of social media marketing. Advertising targeted specifically at women, connectivity, ultimately a lot was brought up in such a short period of time!

JBJ 20 Frag Tank – It’s wet!

tools
Alain and I had a fragging sesh!

alain
Zoanthid corals contain one of the deadliest naturally occurring toxins called palytoxin. So… safety comes first, cafe racer styles LOL!

fragging
Fragment fragment fragment.

jbj20_fragtank_wet
I’m not even sure if the tank has cycled yet but I’ve thrown the frags in and grabbed a few shitty clip on lights I had lying around (still waiting for my Kessil light to arrive!).

unboxing
Then later that afternoon a coral delivery came.

acclimate
Acclimatising the new corals in the frag tank as it’s easier access than the Fluval Edge.

zeason-zoas
I got these 5 zoa frags from Zeason, an individual on Facebook. I’ve put them into the Fluval Edge as I didn’t want to risk losing these in the frag tank just yet.

fts
Full tank shot of the Edge.

tanks
Both tanks in situ.

Time to hang up the camera, almost!

sophie_justinfox_outfit2_3

I’ve been thinking about hanging up the camera. Shooting girls the past couple of years has been super fun; challenging, rewarding, definitely another feather in my cap, but I’m feeling like it’s almost time to move on.

A photographer I know (here’s looking at you Nic Mesker) is also going through similar motions. Nic has let his fans know and they’re replying with suggestions that he’s too good to quit (and that he’s silly and should keep on shooting).

He ‘could’, sure! But ‘should’? I’m not so sure. If you’re not into it anymore, stop and move on, it’s as easy as that! If anything I feel damn sorry for people who do what they do only because others expect them to do it, or they feel like they have to stay in their jobs because of all the time and energy they’ve put in to get to where they’re at today.

Life’s short, drop the expectations and insecurities, looking forward to seeing what Nic does next! (myself too!).

MiPOW Playbulb

playbulb2
In the mail today.

playbulb
3 easy steps and you’re up and running (not even enough time for a cup of tea!).

pink2
The app is super easy to use. Set colour with the colour wheel, brightness with the slider and other functions too.

pink
The colours make the George Nelson bubble lamp come alive!

lue
Blue even!

blueroom
Looking forward to doing some shoots under this light.

mia
Why so blue Mao?!

A little while back my flatmate bought a phone controllable light bulb which looks absolutely amazing in the awesome George Nelson bubble lamps I’ve got throughout the house. I’ve been meanig to buy one for my bedroom ever since and I finally did so this week.

The MiPOW Playbulb comes nicely packaged (feels a bit like an Apple product), you simply screw it in to your light socket like any ordinary bulb, then download the Playbulb app on your phone from the App Store, turn on your Bluetooth and you’re away! You can set different tones with the colour wheel, you even have the choice of animation (candle flames, strobes, you name it!), you can set the light to come on and off at different times (even with an audible alarm!), a nice feature is “shake” where the colour will change at random when you shake your phone.

What’s super nice though is that even without the app, when you flick the light switch on the light will come on normally (and you have full control of it when you launch the app on your phone).

As much as I hate technology (hate is a strong word, but damn I’ve dropped the ball with computers and stuff!!!), I love this thing! It simply changes the mood in the room quite dramatically. Worth every dollar IMHO!

I bought it from MobileZap. A local online shop I’ve been buying gadgets off for some time now (without issues!).

So cute! Right?!

Krysti buzzed me this morning and asked if I was up for lunch, but I’m sick (I’ve not been sick in years!) and so she came over with all this stuff! What a sweetie! :)

JBJ 20 Frag Tank – Gearing up

osmolator
Made in Germany (check the optical sensor on the right!). I had this brand new Tunze Osmolator automatic top off unit lying around and I’m putting it to use on the frag tank to handle water evaporation.

tunze-osmolator-controller
Controllers mounted.

jbj20_pump
The Accela pump I found on eBay came in the mail today. Turns out it’s EXACTLY the same model as the one I had to replace due to the voltage being incorrect for Australia (I bought this tank from the US).
