Time to hang up the camera, almost!

sophie_justinfox_outfit2_3

I’ve been thinking about hanging up the camera. Shooting girls the past couple of years has been super fun; challenging, rewarding, definitely another feather in my cap, but I’m feeling like it’s almost time to move on.

A photographer I know (here’s looking at you Nic Mesker) is also going through similar motions. Nic has let his fans know and they’re replying with suggestions that he’s too good to quit (and that he’s silly and should keep on shooting).

He ‘could’, sure! But ‘should’? I’m not so sure. If you’re not into it anymore, stop and move on, it’s as easy as that! If anything I feel damn sorry for people who do what they do only because others expect them to do it, or they feel like they have to stay in their jobs because of all the time and energy they’ve put in to get to where they’re at today.

Life’s short, drop the expectations and insecurities, looking forward to seeing what Nic does next! (myself too!).

Third attempt at commenting! Not sure what happened to last two so please delete them if they appear :)

Seems like so many photographers are shooting for ‘fans’ and ‘likes’ vs paying bills. It never works out well.

Just re read that. Sounds like i’m being a dick? What i meant was (damn rushing) was its an expensive hobby and time is valuable these days. Hard to make it work in the long run if it’s not paying its way like you and Nic.

Maybe just shoot when you feel like it? Maybe learn some flash lighting? Don’t give it up fully mate.

Oh man, it’s got nothing to do with money Paul! The hobby isn’t expensive either (all I use is a camera! No other gear needed!). I’ve been thrown thousands to do commercial shoots in the past 2 years and I’ve said no to every single job. Money ruins everything in my opinion. I don’t value money at all.

I wasn’t threatening to “give up” shooting. I’ll always enjoy taking photos to document my life, but shooting 3 girls a week (especially random girls who I don’t know) is what’s most likely going to change!

Fair enough. Just because you feel money ruins everything creativity though, it ain’t the case for everyone. You could see it as being an artist, loving what you do, and paying bills while living life your own way :)

        :)

Obviously not everyone see’s money the way I see it Paul! And in regards to working to pay the bills; it’s about compromise, and adjusting levels of it as I get older.

Only recently did I say no for the first time to doing a banner ad. I’ve been doing banner ads for what? 15 years?! It’s time to say no and when I said no to that job, fuck it felt so good!

I’ve done my ‘time’ when it comes to using my creative energy to better someone else’s business. I’m more focussed on putting my energy into my own brand from now onwards.

Building that RB26 powered 28 roadster would be a nice change of pace :)
