Welcome to the Fox’s Den Cacia.

Red wine stains her lips. Cacia’s never been to Sydney before. I’m honoured to be a part of her first trip.

Body clock is out of whack. Late night feed at Petaling.

Artist & model Cacia Zoo, who’s spent the last 6 years in NYC, flew in to Sydney yesterday and she’ll be staying with me for a few nights. Jess and I picked her up from the airport yesterday, and straight off the bat we were having D&M’s about art and life. Emotional, driven and open, she’s larger than life (and her laugh is wicked!).

We downed a bottle of red. Cacia translated some of Ren Hang‘s poetry for Jess and I, which was amazing (it’s hilarious!). Ren’s poetry reminded me of the poetry I used to write when I was 21 so I dug it up and read some of it out loud, which in turn has inspired me to share it with the world once again.

It’s heavy, half of it is the outcome of my emotional state during the passing away of my Dad to cancer. The other half was written in relation to that stage in your life where you’re a little too old to call it teenage angst but much too young to call it a midlife crisis.

Red wine, poetry readings, late night food hunting and fiery conversations. Cacia’s helping to bring the Artist in me out to play. It’s going to be a great weekend!

Katana

katana_maintenancekit
The sword came with this maintenance kit to keep the blade well-oiled, powdered and polished.

tsuba
I’m pretty happy with the hand guard on this sword. It’s ornate but not over the top, just what I was looking for. The saya (the scabbard for the sword) is also just plain glossy black without any crazy designs, characters or artwork. Just what I was looking for!

blade
She’s heavy, very well weighted. I love it!

I’ve always wanted a Japanese sword. When I was a kid I was crazy about Ninjas. Dad would take me to the local VHS video store once a week and I’d always pick a Ninja film to take home. At the Easter Show every year I bought the Ninja Showbag and even brought plastic ninja stars with me to school for a few years (as well as dressing up and climbing trees!).

I’ve been aware of cheap Samurai swords for sale at Paddy’s Markets for years. I always assumed they were rubbish so this morning I set out to buy a Hanwei swords from Lawrance Ordnance on George St. in the city. The cheapest being around $500. On my way in I thought I’d drop by Paddy’s to see if there was still anyone in there that sold swords. I walked around for a while not seeing any, and thought that they must have stopped selling them for legal reasons, then I found a guy selling some.

I asked about his prices, they ranged from $60 up to $300. He kept passing me down the more ornate crazy ones, none of which I liked. He kept asking what I wanted it for. I just said I’d like to photograph it, so it had to look amazing. I’m not sure why he avoided handing me over the one that caught my eye, the one which had no graphics on it, no characters, just a plain glossy black scabbard. When he finally did hand it to me he said that this one was for real training as it had a better quality steel blade and more importantly was weighted correctly. I had to have it, and at $100 I think it was a steal!

I’m sure the more expensive (up to $2k+) Hanwei swords sold at the shop on George street would be superior to this one I picked up, but as much as I hate saying “that’ll do”, this sword I picked up is much more than what I was expecting for $100. I’m happy and can’t wait to shoot it with a girl whether she’s Japanese, or not, which will surely ruffle a few feathers out there, but hey culture mashing is my thing and those that know me know that I’m more about cultural appreciation than cultural appropriation.

We ate at Sky Phoenix Chinese Restaurant in Westfields, we were shoved in a corner with broken lights (in the dark) and they refused to split bills (in order for us to qualify for free parking), manager had heaps of attitude too, so my Auntie/Mum’s younger sister decided to do this. LOL!

Monday Fundays

hunter-st-laksa
First stop, Malay-Chinese Takeaway on Hunter St. for a bowl of arguably the best Laksa in Sydney.

laksa
SO good. I’m allergic to chilli (I sweat profusely when having even the slightest amount), but I can eat this no worries!

gear
I then did a HUGE shop for winter wear (all will be revealed soon!). I finally got myself some SUPRA Skytops! I’ve wanted a pair for so many years! We went to The North Face flagship store to buy a jacket but they literally had nothing at all in stock in my size. Not one single jacket, thermal wear, NOTHING! So lame as I’ve wanted a plain North Face jacket for as long as I could remember.

jupiter-ascending-premiere
Later that night we checked out the Australian premiere of Jupiter Ascending (by the Wachowski Brothers) at the IMAX!

popcorn
Free popcorn and drinks!

cheeseburger
Not wanting to eat a heavy meal, but a bit peckish, we downed cheeseburgers at McDonalds. Jess modified her cheeseburger by asking for it on a steamed bun and damn, so good!

matcha
Then matcha from Chanoma Cafe, so awesome.

Spent Monday Funday buying a shitload of gear for extremely cold weather. Can’t say anything right now, but all will be revealed soon enough! Later tonight we checked out the Australian Premiere of Jupiter Ascending at the IMAX. Was cool to score tickets to this! Won’t give out any spoilers as it’s not out for a couple more days yet, but it’s a wild ride that’s for sure.

Cape Banks

Jess and I spent Valentines Day together last year, and completely by chance we’ve spent it together again this year!

Instead of dining fancy and blowing tons of cash (which we already did in Melbourne last week!) we had lunch at Shalom, probably my fave Indonesian restaurant as it’s cheap and cheerful and reminds me of street food back in Indo.

We then tried to get on Bare Island (I still hadn’t been), but oops, Sundays only! So whilst we were in the area we thought we’d go and check out Cape Banks.

Just next to the shipwreck we found a little penguin cowering under the rock. As soon as I saw him I knew something wasn’t right. He wasn’t exactly scared of us, and it wasn’t his home. I figured he was sick and most likely going to die overnight if left there. Jess being the good samaritan that she is decided to call Wires, and that led us on a wild goose chase to track down the right people to speak to in regards to saving this little dude. We finally got the right number for the local rangers but the phone rang through (no one picked up).

I was ready to give up at this stage, but Jess called one of the previous organisations she spoke to and asked to leave a message for the local rangers. We were walking back to the car when she got a call, which had us going all the way back to the shipwreck/penguin to give the rangers GPS co-ordinates off our phone, and photos of the penguin and it’s location under the rock too! Whether they saved him, or not, we won’t know but I’m sure Jess has stocked up on some good karma either way!

coldbrew_brewristas
And what we were really here for, that amazing Brewrista’s cold brew.

Took Jess to Brewristas today for some cold drip. Boss man Kevin was a legend and let us taste all 3 of his brews, the originalCold Brew (which is still my fave), the Brewmonade which I’m liking more every time I try it, and Brewtea which Jess liked the most.

They’re selling so much cold drip that they’re always low on stock! I managed to take home a couple of bottles of Cold Brew though, and Jess took home a bottle of Brewtea! Bzzzzt!

Photoshoot with Estelle

estelle_couch

Had a late afternoon shoot with Estelle yesterday, who’s a glamour model who’s been on the cover of ZOO Magazine a fair few times. She’d seen the shots I took with Britta, and Shontelle and wanted more of the same in her folio (IE: more natural, less photoshopped to death skin and shiny wet tits and ass I assume?!). The sunlight in the afternoon was so different to the brighter whiter light of 11am so I struggled a little, which felt strange but Estelle was a lot of fun so it all worked out alright in the end. Photoshoot with Amanda Sierras

amanda_sierras_justinfox_1

I’ve uploaded the photos from the snappy shoot I did with Amanda Sierras last weekend in Melbourne. Amanda was awesome. Heaps of energy and she’s drop dead gorgeous! We shot in her apartment. I’m not a stranger to dirty windows! So didn’t mind them at all. Find the whole set here: http://www.justinfoxphoto.com/amanda
