El Jannah Charcoal Chicken

Hangin’ out West.

Worth the trek for this, the best Garlic Sauce in Sydney.

Charcoal Chicken was really tender tonight, what a feast!

We left no room for sweet treats from Abla’s. Better luck next time!

It’s been many months since I first ate at El Jannah Charcoal Chicken with the BMU boys and I’d been excited about it all day. Andy came and picked me up at 6PM, traffic wasn’t as bad as we thought it was going to be but it still took us an hour to get out west.

For $20 you get more food than you can eat but I was only there for the garlic sauce. I’d happily drive an hour out just to have that sauce with chips…SO DAMN GOOD! We stuffed ourselves, had plenty of laughs and afterwards we thought we’d check out Abla’s Patisserie which everyone that loves El Jannah seems to rave about. What a shop! I’ve never ever seen more variations of backlava in my life. Unfortunately all of us were way too stuffed to even think about buying some. Next time we’ll eat less at El Jannah’s and save some room for cake + coffee for sure.

Kensington Peking

Salt and Pepper prawns.

Shredded beef, the crispiest in Sydney.

San Tung chicken, Peter’s signature dish.

Crispy Peking Duck.

Had dinner at Kensington Peking the other night with the family (always awesome). My nephew Harris was over from Indonesia. He’s 18 now and looking to study here next year. I’ve not seen him since he was a little boy and it turns out he;s crazy into cars. He remembers one time when I took him for a blat in the GT-R and he says that’s the reason why he’s crazy about cars today!

I’ve got to admit that hearing Harris say that made me feel extremely proud and honoured to be a part of his memories and to be a trigger for his current passion in life. He drives an EG Civic at home and he pesters his dad every day for a K20 engine conversion, or even a B16!

Unas. I’m over it.

Chicken Jaeger, see the sauce? That’s pretty much what came out of my ass a few hours later.

The Schoff, always awesome.

So last night some of the boys got together for dinner at Unas. I’ve been a fan of their Chicken Jaeger Schnitzel for years now, but over the years I’ve seen the dish get smaller and smaller, less and less sauce, more and more expensive and just generally worse and worse. Last night was another one of those bad nights. Chicken was thin, tough and the piece under the top piece of chicken was burnt dark brown.

What’s worse is that when I got home I had a stomach ache, after I recovered I got a message from Garth saying his stomach was killing him and he’d gone to the toilet 3 times already.

FU Unas. Never again!

VWGolf.net.au Schnitzel Night

David’s R32.

Tendy’s Scirocco R.

Suga went for the salad!

Of-course I went for something a lot more naughty haha.

Group shot.

VWGolf.net.au Schnitzel Night (1st Wednesday of every month) last Wednesday night @ the Bavarian at EQ. We had almost 20 people in for dinner and I took the opportunity to finally shoot David’s R32 Golf (he’s been wanting me to shoot his car for ages!). As much as I love taking photos for this blog it’s been strange having someone ask me to shoot their car. I definitely fell short. In the dark car park the GF1 just produced noisy shots. The more I edited them in Photoshop the noisier things got. Thankfully we’ve got John, an amazingly talented Photoshopper on the forums. He worked his magic on 2 of the above images (of Christina’s R32 and my GTI).

Many more pictures here.

Taste of Thai

BBQ chicken was great.

Ben in my Anja sunnies. Ben insists that the shape of his face doesn’t suit sunnies. I insist on trying to find sunnies to suit him ahaha.

Last night I had a good catch-up and dinner with Ben at Taste of Thai in Randwick (always good because Ben’s one of those guys I can openly talk about relationships with, fashion even). I’ve known of this place for years, have walked and driven past it many times, it’s always packed and I always knew it was only a matter of time before I was going to eat there.

The menus were well worn, it was packed and the food came out real fast. Tasty meals, reliable Thai, the way it should be!

Suminoya

Tucked away in a one way dead end lane.

$50, all you can eat and sashimi on the menu? Srs?!

Our table had 3 free standing hot charcoal BBQ’s.

Venue was crazy smokey and the heat emanating from the hot charcoal was pretty intense.

Last night Willy organised an impromptu dinner for Charles, who’s back in town for a couple of weeks. Most places were booked out apparently but he managed to get us a table for 9 at Suminoya in the city.

I’ve never been to Suminoya before, it’s owned by the same people that run Rengaya and Koya in Sydney’s North but instead of using gas they use hot coals. The restaurant was tucked away in a small lane close to Martin Place and inside it was crazy smokey (my new jacket now stinks like BBQ!).

Dirty stories and hardcore payouts. As usual when hanging out with the old Auto Salon Magazine guys there was much laughter! Food was awesome too, and great value at $50 for all you can eat.

Mamak

Mamak.

Roti was awesome.

Ayam Goreng.

Chicken Satay.

Nasi Lemak (coconut rice).

I’d heard about Mamak, a Malay restaurant for a while now. Every time someone said something about it I thought they were saying ‘vagina’ in Indonesian (Memek!). Christina and I have been hunting down new things to eat so we gave it a go. We got there at just before 6PM and it was already packed, we literally got the last table available (and on the way out there was a decent sized queue outside).

Like seeing a movie. I tried my best to ignore the hype, but alas I have to say that I think it’s more hype than amazing food. Sure, the roti was awesome, really light and fluffy. I’ll be back to try more of the different roti they serve up, but the friend chicken wasn’t the best I’ve had (my Mum’s is way better!), the satay chicken wasn’t the best either (my uncle still kills it, Jimbaran a close second) and the nasi lemek was just boring (lamb curry was crazy tough and dry too).

Soul Food

Hot Wings with blue cheese dipping sauce.

NYC Chilli Dog.

Pulled Pork Sandwich.

All washed down with a Bud to keep the American theme going.

After watching MasterChef last night, where the contestants prepared a “soul food” meal in Harlem NYC, both Christina and I were craving something warm and hearty. We Googled for a bit and decided to try Blue Plate Bar & Grill in Neutral Bay. Friendly service, nice atmosphere and the food was indeed spicy and hearty. Not quite the Fried Chicken, Ribs and Black Eyed Peas we were after, but still great!

Hanging out with Jordan

Bulmers with ice at the Argyl.

Tapas treats.

Jordan shooting AP’s R32 Golf.

The QSR bike was towed by this hummer with crazy huge wheels.

QSR bike.

Fat!

Jordan at work.

QSR’s Million Dollar Drag Car. There’s so much gold plating in the engine bay, you have to see it to believe it.

Jordan‘s about to leave to go back home to the states so we thought we’d hang out. He had a couple of shoots to do today. One was Anthony’s Golf R32 which has a twin turbo R36 engine swap, the other shoot was the Queen Street Racing Million Dollar Drag Car and matching bike.
