Simone & Maya’s Pizza Night

Jamie and Christina.

Mum and her friend Wally.

Michael and my Mum’s youngest sister Helen.

Richie and Jamie.

So many pizza bases.

Gnocchi.

Gnocchi was so damn good!

Glenn

…and Glenn’s Dad!

Romina and Nicholas.

Massive props to the chefs Maya and Simone, who were frantic in the kitchen all night.

Simone & Maya, who have been in Australia for about a year now, treated us to a traditional Italian home made pizza night last night at Mum’s place. I don’t think I’ve ever had a pizza feast so good. 14 pizzas?! They just kept coming out of the oven!

Valentines with Friends

Pre-dinner drinks, eying the menu and a teaser of our magical outdoor setting outside.

Jon opening the doors to our outdoor setting. He was the best host and chef last night!

Magical!

Kay’s poem, read by Robbie, set the scene nicely.

Caroline’s mask. Everyone was given a blank mask and plenty of creative tools (in the form of scissors, paint pens, feathers and other accessories) to design and create their own masks, great idea!

Sydney rock oyster was a creamy starter.

Seared scallops on a heart shaped red wine tomato with wasabi mayonnaise. So good!

Lemon lime bitters sorbet made for the perfect palette cleanser.

Crispy skin pork with plum sauce was perhaps the biggest hit of the night. Too good!

Jon’s signature ‘Lady & the Tramp’ Spaghettini & meatballs.

Passionfruit sorbet.

Dessert for her. Frangelico & Hazelnut praline tartlet, berry pavlova with a berry compote, Nat’s rose essence cupcake & red velvet vanilla bean cream cheese frosting cupcake. complete with carriage.

Dessert for him came on a glass plate. Hmmmm!

Gen and Suga playing with sauce syringes.

Last night Jon, Kay and Robbie treated us to a very special Valentines dinner. Together we bought Jon a set of global knives on his B’day and he’s been planning to use them on cooking a dinner for all of us ever since then.

We all had a feeling he was going to go all out, but he truly surpassed himself last night. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that he deserves to be working for one of the few top restaurants in Sydney. I’d go further and say he deserves to own and run his own restaurant!

Dinner, drinks and company was awesome, and as usual, with the crazy crew, things got whack at the end of the night. I passed out first (damn it!) but regained consciousness at 4AM to drive us home haha!

Return to Yuli’s

Best sangria I’ve ever tasted, frozen grapes in place of ice cubes made for a very nice touch.

Astro turf!

Suga and I.

The naughtiest vegetarian food around.

OMG the eggplant dish.

Polenta was great.

We did have plans to check out the Malaysian street fair for dinner, or the INfront sponsored event at Taylor Square but after a few beers in Surry we just ended up levitating to Yuli’s for round 2 of that insane eggplant dish (it’s too good).

PS: All photos taken by Jessica Lock on her (white) GF1!

Valentines Day

Pre-dinner drinks at the Argyle.

Tuna tasting plate.

Prawn Shumai.

Trilogy of chocolate mousse.

I took Christina out to Shaun Presland’s Saké restaurant last night for Valentines Day. We’ve been wanting to visit ever since seeing him on Master Chef, and being sushi lovers it was only a matter of time! Atmosphere was nice and the food was great, fusion, but in a good way. It’s definitely up there with the best Japanese I’ve had in Sydney.

LeSarab

Mezze plate. The fried bread was a very nice touch.

Rice.

It’s all about the sauce!

Had a great catchup with newly weds Di and Felix the other night. We hadn’t seen them since their wedding so we had heaps to talk about. They’ve both just moved into their new place (very nice) and Christina and I had a lovely little housewarming gift for them, it’s a shame we’d forgotten to bring it along though! Got to hate that huh?!

We had dinner at LeSarab in Concord. I’ve been craving garlic sauce ever since El Jannah’s and whilst it wasn’t as good it was still great (and of-course presentation was way above).

After dinner we went back to Feix and Di’s place for a cup of tea. They’ve got a new LED TV which totally spun me out. We were watching Bond (Quantum of Solace) and the picture was so damn bright and sharp it felt like watching a completely different movie. Almost like watching a movie that hadn’t been graded, like a directors cut, or something…no point talking about it, has to be seen to be believed!

Turpan Restaurant Kensington

Turpan Restaurant Kensington. Rugs on walls, the smell of armpits… gotta love it!

Excellent Chinese Seafood Restaurant

Yup it really is.

The public herb garden outside is such a great community idea.

OK so they loose points on presentation, but you eat with your mouth, not your eyes! Tofu has a juicy scallop inside, special surprise!

Had dinner at Christina’s family local last night in Carlingford Court. These guys serve up some great traditional Chinese dishes which I’m not so familiar with and after eating some so so food recently (most of it which has been overpriced, and in my opinion trying too hard), it’s just refreshing and comforting to have such reliable good food.

Flying Fajita Sisters

Flying Fajita Sisters on Glebe Pt. Road.

Nachos was spicy (we chose the beans).

Snapper was fresh.

Beef Burrito ws good, would have been better if it had rice in it too IMHO.

That Nachos at Pancakes on the Rocks the other night just did nothing for me so last night we dropped into the Flying Fajita Sisters in Glebe for a proper Mexican meal. $70 seems like a lot to pay for beans, corn chips and guacamole (well OK, Christina did have fish) but the staff were nice and the food wasn’t bad either (though I’d prefer Guzman y Gomez any time!).

Assiette

Scallops and prawns, so pretty, like a Picasso! They say you eat with your eyes. I disagree as this dish looked so much prettier than it tasted.

Barramundi + Saffron Gnochi. Simple flavours, hearty and home style.

Mum treated us to lunch today to celebrate her B’day (again). We went to Assiette, a fusion (I hate that word when used with food) French restaurant in Surry Hills. Food was so so, looked pretty though. Would I suggest it? Nah, but they have a $35 3 course meal on Fridays and a $55 2 course menu + wine during Sydney Festival so for that kinda money it’s pretty impressive.
