Had a shoot with Nicole Castle yesterday. Nicole reached out over email. Turns out she’s a friend of Britta’s (who I shot a while back, revisit those pics here), and having just started competing in the modelling scene she was after some photos.

I heard her rock up before I saw her! Nicole drives a modified turbocharged Mini (mad!). She’s a lawyer by day and has a kink for good interior design as she’s currently busy doing up her own pad in Manly at the moment. She’s all smiles, laughs and legs! Super fun to hang out with, be sure to follow her on Instagram: @njc3788.

PS: I got to shoot with my new Sony A7s. Straight off the bat I found the lens a bit too tight. I just can’t fit anything into frame (Nicole’s quite tall too, fitting her in full frame head to toe on the couch, and bed were pretty impossible!). Focussing is damn frustrating too as the camera just wants to spot focus in the centre of the frame, and I can’t just simply point on the screen to where I want the lens to focus, so now I’m shooting in a completely different way. IE: Pointing at what I want to focus on, them moving to frame and shoot. I’m also finding myself using the viewfinder, which again is a bit new and unnatural to me after the GF1 and GF6, though I like it and will most likely persist with it. LOTS of my shots were out of focus unfortunately. I’ve since changed my focus mode to wide, might even try focus locking next time too.

a7S VS GF6

Sony a7S

zeiss
Carl Zeiss UV Filter. So clear that it’s a bit trippy.

side
Feels good to hold, but the springy shutter button feels a bit cheap and nasty.

gf6_vs_a7s
GF6 vs a&S size comparo.

The decision was made to upgrade to a Sony a7S with Zeiss 55mm F1.8. Daniel from OFIM put me on to a good deal with Marcus at digiDIRECT in Westfield’s Bondi Junction. I ended up taking the camera home, and bought a Zeiss UV Filter to protect the lens, a new memory card too.

The camera comes with 2 batteries! That’s pretty cool. The charger is pretty slim, and there’s a USB/wall charger too so I had both batteries charging in no time. It’s substantially bigger and heavier than my GF6 setup, but it’s nowhere near as heavy as Matt or Ved’s DSLR setups. The focussing feels slower than my GF6, either way I’m looking forward to playing with this camera!

Had a snappy shoot with Jaymee yesterday. Jaymee reached out to me on Facebook after seeing photos I took with Shontelle, she was more than happy to pay for a shoot but I’m still not so comfortable with charging (needs more thought!), and I was having a good day, so I just said yes!

I’d like to keep shooting just for the fun of it, but then again I do want to upgrade to a full frame camera after playing around with Matthew Mead’s setup last weekend at the Zen Photowalk. Hopefully I’ll be upgrading tomorrow thanks to internet friends who chimed in with lots of great suggestions on my Facebook profile.

PS: More photos on my Tumblr (NSFW!): http://justinfox.tumblr.com

Zen Photowalk 2

Zen Photowalk #2 was to Cockatoo Island! Perfect weather (luckily it wasn’t the day before, where temperatures were through the roof) and a much bigger crowd than our first Photowalk! Was such a great day out. Matthew Mead and I are already discussing locations for the next one! Look out for the full feature, featuring work from all the photographers on the day, on Zen Blog soon.

Selling my R32 Golf

10564357693_15bf842eed_b

A few months ago I was offered $50k for my R32 GT-R. Biggest offer to date so I sincerely thanked the guy who made the offer. It was a decent one which had me in a spin for a night, but I kindly refused.

The last few weeks I’ve had an offer of $37k for my R32 Golf. I’ve been in a spin about it every day since.

I did intend to sell it a little while back (I even put it up on carsales) for a classic 70’s 911, which I had always planned to get when I turn 40 (next May!), but the 911 dream is dead, mainly because they’ve just become a bit too “trendy” for my liking.

I love both cars too much. The Golf has been the perfect daily for me. It’s loud and angry when I want it to be, and at the press of a button it’s silent and can easily sit 4 full sized adults, has great audio and leather interior (heated seats! So good in winter). It’s mostly invisible to the authorities (full engineers cert helps) and when I’m in it and a C63 pulls up next to me at the lights I don’t wish I was in the GT-R (which has been the case with many of my previous daily drivers).

So I’ve been chewing on this great offer for my Golf, and this morning I thought I’d wash the car. After touching it (lol), and seeing it clean I’ve made my mind up! Nope, she’s not for sale! Haha (cool story bro?).

Mama’s Bưởi

Last night the food crew decided to check out Toshiba’s Seriously Japanese Pop-Up Zushi Roller-Coaster, a pop-up that had a queue so long that we turned around as soon as we got there (that’s just the fucked up thing about Sydney isn’t it? When something “cool” is on, it’s a jam packed nightmare, most likely because of hipster sites like Broadsheet!).

mamasbouimenu
We ended up heading up towards Holt Street in search for food and saw these inviting menus outside of Mama’s Bưởi, a new Vietnamese restaurant on route.

mamasboui
There was a table for us, but we had to be out in an hour, we decided against it, and just as we stepped outside, one of the staff called us back in as someone had cancelled! Decor was nice, obviously new to look old (fake patina) but still nice.

nanami
Nanami perusing the menu.

hanoibeer
Always love trying new beers.

fishcakes_mamasboui
Fish cakes were worthy of a mention. Same traditional flavours, but the super crunchy outside made for a new experience.

porkhok
And the only other dish really worthy of a mention was this massive crispy pork hok! Over the top!
